Arrow How can I exercise with back problem?

Hi. I'm a new member.
I found this site using Google and thought WOW!
Does anyone have a possible suggestion as to how I can exercise with a lower back problem? I have had this for about 15 years but have always managed to exercise the way I wanted to - gym, running, dancing, cycling. However, as I'm getting older (I'm 48), I'm finding it slightly painful to do the things I enjoy most. I don't want to make anything worse so I have all but stopped exercising. Consequently, I am not only becoming plumper but feeling unfit too. I really want to get back into exercising but not sure what to do.
Any ideas?

Default Try Yoga!

I too suffered from constant low back pain and had totally stopped exercising. I started taking 1 yoga class a week when I was 45 years old. Now 5 years later I am stronger, firmer and have been pain free for 4 years. I take 3 classes a week now. You will find that the relaxation and meditation of yoga will help your peace of mind too!

Thumbs up Thanks

Thanks for that. I have tried yoga - at home - and found it was a little painful but maybe I was doing something wrong so should really try a class!

Definitely try a class. A good instructor will guide you to prevent injury and help you learn to do the poses correctly. I have two people over the age of 70 in the class I take. Both have back problems. Yoga has worked wonders for my back too.

Pilates mat would be a better class for you to take than yoga. It strengthens your entire core and a good class will teach you how to move your body through a stablized center to help you avoid unnecessary strain to your back. I've been teaching Pilates mat for about 5 years and I know how much it's helped alot of my students become pain free. Try to find a beginner class and go into easy. Good luck!
