A good way to judge if you're working hard enough is whether or not you can hold a conversation. If you can ride along and talk with the people you're riding with, you're not working hard enough to make any real gains as far as fitness and weight loss are concerned. Of course, riding and being outside is good no matter what, but if you want to see results, you should be riding fast and hard enough to only get a couple of words out at a time. It should be hard to have a conversation.
