    Default Weight Training

Right now I am working out about 4 days a week. Usually high intensity cardio. I have only been doing about 15 minutes of weights and about 3 hours of cardio. How much weight training *should* I be doing? I have a limited amount of time and usually some of the problem is that lately I've been working out Wed-Sat and having to take Sun-Tuesday off just due to the sheer amount of homework and how my schedule falls. Thoughts??

I currently have lost about 4 lbs and am trying to lose 15 by October 30th. I also want to make sure I am toning up and helping to boost my metabolism too though so my body is helping me out some in the downtime.

Usually I do an hour of weight training 2 days in the week (never 2 days in a row tho, gotta give the muscles time to recuperate lol!)... I've also done 30 minutes 4 days, etc...

But I'm consistently doing 2 hours of weight training a week and it is doing wonders to tone my body! So if I were you I'd add on another 15 minutes to your weight training you're doing now (maybe double the # of reps? Or work on upper body for 15 then lower body for 15?) and see how well that works for you!

Thanks KM! Maybe I can start by throwing in another 15 minutes at home one of the days I don't have time to do a "full' workout... I have bands and weights at home so I could totally try that. I am mostly focusing on abs and upper body since I'm doing Zumba 1-2 times a week and gym 1-2 times a week (elliptical-intervals). I think my legs are definitely toning up quite a bit without...although I did two sets on both my quads and hamstrings today to mix it up a bit. I like to keep my muscles and body confused It seems to work for me...

    Thanks for the input

KM, one more thing... Do you mind if I ask how much cardio you do in addition to the 2 hours of weight lifting?

For cardio I do 4 to 5 hours a week. I do 2 Zumba classes a week, 1 bootcamp class and then I run for an hour once or twice a week... I basically try to get in 6-8 hours of exercise per week, and my schedule kind of mixes it up between cardio and strength training:

    Mon: Zumba-tone 60 minutes
Tues: Weight training 60 min (Pump class or on my own)
    Weds: Zumba-tone 60 min, Core 45 min
    Thurs: Weight training 60 min
    Fri: Bootcamp
Sat and Sun: running (1 hour once or twice in the weekend)

It's a LOT, but I've lost nearly 30 lbs in 12 weeks so its working!

    Hey Ladies,
I know, this post is already a few weeks old....anyway: If you really want to lose weight you should focus more on the weights than the cardio. If you do it the right way (include hiit and maybe combine it with your weight training) then 3-4 times a week for 30 minutes is totally enough. I know it sounds far too little but with the right nutrition that's all it takes!!

    Hi Ladies,

Jennie is right - weight training is definitely the way to go for fat loss. Cardio can actually LOWER your metabolism (if done at a low enough intensity) by reducing muscle mass!

As a Personal Trainer here in the UK i've seen great results by using resistance training with my female clients . I usually structure a 1 hour female fat loss session like this:

15-20 minutes high intensity inteval cardio
40 minutes resistance/weights, usually in circuit format

So basically twice as much resistance work as cardio! And there's no low intensity cardio in there! Obviously there are exceptions to this, but provided the client is relatively healthy it works great. Infact, I helped one female client lose 7lbs and 2" from her waistline in 3 weeks using these methods!

    Hope that helps

    Pete
