I love yoga but really prefer to do it with a group, which my finances don't permit right now. I do Classical Stretch from a DVD or PBS, just about daily and have yoga DVDs too. It doens make a big difference.
I am 62 and as stiff as a board. I thought yoga would definitely be out of the question for me. For goodness sakes, I can't even touch my toes! But I found a few postures on the nett and lo and behold I can do them. All quite simple really, I'm not into twisting and stretching my body too much, but these few simple postures are acheivable for me. And what a difference to the way I feel and especially my posture! I feel fabulous, so much so I am buying a book with more exercises! I can't believe myself. My balance has improved too, so all good. Have others had this experience with yoga?

We can only learn to love by loving. - Iris Mudoch, British writer
In Hindu philosophy, there are 5 main forms of Yoga.
Not all require complex asanas (postures).
The form you seem to practice is Hatha Yoga. Indeed the beginning is not easy, since your body is already molded.
With discipline and daily practice, inch by inch, you will achieve more and more postures.
These asanas are only means to an end, and should not "distract" you from your main goal.

I can't get to classes, anyway they may be a bit more than I can handle. I am content to do the postures at home and now have a DVD coming so that I can get more of the feel of things. When I am concentrating less on what I am trying to do I think that I will become freer to enjoy the meditative side of yoga. In the mean time I am enjoying the effect it has on my body.
I LOVE yoga. My favorite is bikram yoga with a variety of different forms and postures. The beautiful thing about yoga classes is there is no competition, you do what you can do, and that's it. Then as you go along you find yourself being able to do things you couldn't do when you started. I love the feeling I have when class is over. My body is tired but so rejuvenated that I feel like I could running. I haven't been to the chiropractor once since I started hot yoga. I don't get to go as much as I'd like, but it's truly something worth doing.

Any recommendations, by name, of DVDs to use at home?
I'm a real believer in going to classes for a lot of reasons but all my evenings are full. Would love to add yoga to my very busy life.
The yoga dvd in the p90x program is a good one.
Yoga is something that needs to be learned, and I found it very helpful to have someone physically there to correct me when my posture/form was off. Otherwise, you could end up getting injured. So if you do just stick with at home type stuff, please do it carefully and really research and practice in order to get the actual benefit of yoga.
I did yoga off and on for a few years before I discovered bikram yoga. I always found it boring and unchallenging. But that's before I learned how to do it right.![]()
