best way would be to hire a personal trainer in my opinion. just for a few sessions to get yourself accustomed to the exercises, form and principles of weight training. From there, you can then find workout plans on the net, or from friends etc.
So like 90% of other women I have never really done weight training before.
I am just getting ready to join a gym again, and I know that to get a good workout I really need to get away from my typical treadmill elliptical routine.
Can someone just give me a lowdown on weight training. So I don't completely embarass myself.
I literally don't even know where to start.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking I might do.
jay, you might also want to look into any classes that might be offered at the gym. For example, I take two Body Pump classes a week taught by a licensed instructor at the gym, it is low weight/high repetition weight training and I LOVE it!
TRX and PowerFlex are also weight training fitness classes that some gyms offer...

I will definately look into that Monte.
If you don't mind me asking, what gym do you have a membership too?
Technically two...
I have the one that they offer at my place of employment - so that's private obviously lol
And then I also go to the YMCA - tons of equipment, raquetball and basketball courts, instructed classes, everything I could want and FAR more reasonable than any other "gym" in my area. I love it!

All very good suggestion that I agree with. Begin where you feel comfortable. For most that is the weight "machines". As you become more experienced make your way to the free weight floor. Don't let all the muscle heads intimidate you. Many will tell you otherwise, but there is no subsitute for free weights. And don't worry, you aren't going to wake up suddenly all swole up. When you acheive the tone and size you like, you can scale back a little with no problem.
