Playing music WITHOUT headphones or ear buds of any kind, assuming it's kept at a decent level, is 'best' for your inner ears.

I'm not one for loud music. Even though I only run on a closed course while listening to music, I keep the music turned down low because I like to be able to hear everything around me.

I can see where what you're saying about ear buds leading to greater hearing loss is true. Just wait until thhose currently in the 12-18 age range get older. No one will be able to hear anything. Those kids LIVE with earbuds in.

You could always move one side slightly off your ear, something you can't do with earbuds.

I'm not a fan of earbuds of any kind, they don't filter out or override ambient noise very well. I just got some wireless bluetooth headphones to work with my iPhone (the behind your head kind), and so far I really like them. Noise-cancelling, no cord to deal with, and no problems when exercising. I look a little goofy when wearing them, but whatever I don't care.

Please be careful when using headphones when out in public by yourself though (for obvious reasons). I have years of training so I generally don't worry about myself as much as others... just be aware of your surroundings at the very least.

I'm awesomely strong and mean. Okay, maybe not. That's one of the main reasons that filtering out other noise is not what I'm looking for. I mainly just want something I can use while running on a closed course, that won't fall out of my ears constantly. I'm like you, don't really care if it looks goofy or not, just want em to stay on!!

BD, I've used the skull candy ones (and I have ears that normal buds never fit in) and the SC ones seem to work well for me. Occassionally I catch my arm on the cord and pull it down But otherwise, they stay in and they are only like $10-12 at Target (sometimes you can find them cheaper than that at TJ Maxx too )
