Ive been thinking of starting some kind of exercise routine; Ive put on some weight that needs to come off. I was thinking about either Zumba or P90X. However, exercise usually makes my body and joints hurt due to fibromyalgia, so the Zumba is probably the more likely one. Anyone have any advice, or some alternative programs?

P90X is a more rigid and labor - intensive program, but you can probably choose to do some accommodations/adjustments. Zumba is a better choice though, since it is more moderate than P90-X (I've tried and love both). I also urge you to try yoga, pilates and tai chi. These latter choices are more moderate and easily modified according to your fitness level.

jaden, have you thought about taking up swimming? This might be a good option for you given the complications with fibromyalgia

Doing an interval lap-swim or even a water exercise class a few times a week will give you the cardio you need and will be easy on your joints.

I had thought about it, but I dont swim very well, and the only local public pool was shut down because an 8-year-old drowned there a few years ago Thats why I had considered Zumba, because the community college offers a class that starts next month.

What exactly is Zumba? I've seen some large posters around, not quite sure what it is?

I work in an office and am feeling flabby and sick of it. I was hoping to take pilates as that can be quite a workout, but it seems to be tough to find an affordable class around here. My other option is yoga... but does yoga really help to slim you down, or is it just more for mind/relaxation?

Zumba is a blast! It's like latin dancing. Go to youtube and look for a video. It is a lot of fun, not that hard, but way fun.

I bought the Zumba game for the XBOX Kinect and it is definitely a lot of fun.

I love Zumba! It's an aerobics dance fitness program that revolves around Latin music and dance. They have Zumba you can do from home with videos, game consoles, etc, and many gyms/fitness centers offer instructed classes of Zumba. It's one of those classes where you can own the intensity of the workout - you make it as hard as you want it to be. I do Zumba through fitness classes offered at my local YMCA twice a week and I have a great time every time.

jaden, if you can't get to a pool (but look around and see if there are any near besides the one that got shut down - you don't need to be a good swimmer to do water exercises) then Zumba at the nearby community college might just be the way to go!

I'm a big fan of Classical Stretch. You'll find it on PBS or on DVD.
