    Default Question about aerobic exercise

People tell me that exercises such as squats, crunches and dumbell routines aren't actually aerobic. But they often make me breathe heavily and sometimes I even break out in a sweat. Surely this is aerobic isn't it? Today it is snowing and very cold so I am indoors. I spent an hour or so doing this type of exercise and felt it was every bit as good a workout for heartr health as going for a brisk walk or bike ride. What do others think Please. Love to hear your views.

If your heart rate is up for an extended period of time, I would say that's aerobic. If it's up in an anaerobic state and then back to resting, then back up past the aerobic state again. That's more anerobic. But, even extended anerobic exercise works your aerobic state. But it doesn't work the other way around, if your heart rate never goes above the aerobic state, it's strictly aerobic. I think that's why so many people get good results from interval training.

I would like to suggest you that whatever you exercise you do, do timely and regularly. In most of the cases it has been seen that people start doing exercise, but they do not continue with that and it ends up with nothing.

I agree with sourpuss. It is really good to do these toning exercises with weights in a circuit routine to get in some cardio. For example, do squats, then flyes, then lunges immediately after one another then add in some jumping jacks in between to keep your heart rate up. You can also make the movement more aerobic by tweaking it; instead of just a squat you could do jump squats....etc. However, when doing these types of workouts we have to remember to not go through them too quickly or we could easily injure ourselves. Always maintaining proper technique and control.

Zana, any reasonable exercise is good in helping us feel better. It pumps up our "feel good" chemicals and gives a natural boost to a down mood. However, if you are very depressed, have you thought of seeing a doctor and getting some help or advise with it? In the mean time, try going for a brisk walk or a bike ride. Being outside can help, especially if you are out amongst nature somewhere and not just in the city. The green of plants can give a sense of peace. Maybe go for a walk in the Botanical Gardens.

A good nights sleep is also important, as is a healthy, balanced diet.

But these suggestions only help the symptoms. It is important to at the same time, address your problems and those issues you are worried about. See if you can talk to someone about these and find some way through the difficulties.

Hi Zana, I note you are on-line, are you still doing aerobics? I agree with snooks, very in-depth and good advise, any exercise is good for you, calms you have you considered polities or yoga, or meditation?
