I am new to cycling and I am doing it as part of my fitness regimen. We have a tandem bike that we ride every Fridays after work for about 8 miles around the neighborhood. My husband rides his bicycle every Monday and Wednesday with a buddy. I cannot join them yet because I don't have a bicycle of my own yet. My mother - in - law lent me hers and it's a thumb shifter which I do not like very much.

My question is, what kind of bicycle would you recommend that I get - I am a beginner, I want to be able to train and do some long distance cycling in the future (i.e. century ride and maybe IRON MAN if I get to the fitness level it requires). Also, I am petite and weigh about 105 lbs (not that weight matters), I mostly ride with a mid to higher gear on the tandem with my hubby and we do climb hills well.

Is TREK more reasonable than Canondale? If you want to give me more info, you may VM me. Thank you.

Trek offers triathlon and dual sport bikes, which might be more suited to your competitive goals. Cannondale has roadbikes, but they do not offer triathlon bikes. Also, for a petite person like you, you'll probably be better of with a Trek, specifically a WSD (Women's specific design) Trek road bike. Cannondales a nice bike too and also high quality, but their bike frames have a longer top tube, which is more suited for taller/longer torso style bodies. For a person looking to get into racing, fit can mean EVERYTHING to your performance.

Whatever you chose, you should definitely go to a bike shop with a certified bike fitting specialist to get you set up on your bike!

Google "PedalsMonkey" Here you can compare models from both manufacturers, side by side.

I have ALWAYS been a Trek fan. In fact, I don't believe I've owned anything else. Hubby is predominantly a Trek fan and has had a Cannondale or two. One of our life long best friends is a Pro Downhiller who also owns his own bike shop. He's been a fan of Cannondale, Scott and GT.

I have recently started looking at a Hybrid Women's by Bianchi. Take a look at them. The reviews are great and our friend speaks highly of them as well.

I haven't bought any single ride as of now, though it would be nice to do it now since some are on-sale. Having a very tight budget is not much help either. Anyway, I think we will stick to Trek. I have found one already and I am saving up for it. Thank you ladies for your advice.
