Getting on a treadmill or exercise bike is like the movie Groundhog Day for me: it just keeps repeating non-stop making me absolutely bored. I'm looking for a fun way to get in shape. I'm still waiting for my wii console to come so I can play wii fit, so in the meantime is dancing a good way to exercise? If so, how much do I need to do in a week?

Anything that gets your heart rate up and your body moving is good exercise. I love dancing and if you do it for long enough periods of time, it's the equivalent of most cardio you could be doing at the gym. I wish my town had dance classes for adults. I'd LOVE that. But no...only for kiddies.

Like you, I hate working out at the gym.. It's really boring for me! Like BD said, anything that gets your heart rate up and gets you moving is good exercise!
one big thing here is Zumba. I have never tried it before, but I hear it's a really good work out. Also, I've taken pole fitness, which is also a ton of fun. It's not stripping - it's utilizing the pole as a fitness tool. You get to learn a ton of new tricks and it's the best work out ever because you're working your entire core.

I second Zumba! It's supposed to be really fun, and there's a Wii game for it too. As far as how much to do, it's about keeping your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes, not including warmup and cooldown.

You might try your local Goodwill for a dance aerobics video to tide you over until your Wii comes. It shouldn't cost more than a few dollars.

zumba is a wonderful aerobic class. it gets your heart rate up and keeps it up. and let me tell you, it don't seem like exercise. the 45 minute class flys by. 45 minutes on the elliptical. boring but effective. so i would say if you are gonna dance for exercise, make yourself a play list of 6 or 7 of your favorite upbeat tunes and get moving. but remember to move your whole body to dance and get your heart rate up. one of the things that makes zumba so efficient at burning calories is that it involves your whole body. arms, legs, back, bum, your whole core!

So just jumping and flailing my arms like a maniac to Nirvana in the privacy of my own dorm room is good exercise?

Yep. So is doing the twist. It's all about sustaining the action for the right amount of time.

Dancing can be really helpful in changing the bad mood. It is a great stress buster.
