Am looking for an exercise routine to do at any time, to tone and keep in good shape. Abs are a must please! Does your heart rate HAVE to get up to get fit or can exercises be done without breaking out into an ugly, panting, sweat??

Am over 40 so please be gentle....

Sorry, but yes, you have to sweat. If you want to tone up and want good abs you'll need to lose fat around the midsection for the muscles to show.
A quick workout that I do when I'm traveling is something like this:

5 min skipping rope to warm up.
    2 min crunches
3 min skipping at fast pace
    1 min pushups
2 min abs (something other than crunches)
    3 min skipping fast
    1 min abs again
    1 min pushups
5 min skipping for cool down

    good luck

Thumbs up Dear Sourpuss (You do not sound like one....!)

Many thanks for your routines! I have to confess that I am an absoulte novice at all this exercising and need to confirm what you mean by a crunch. Is this when you lay on your back and put your hands behind your head and raise your body to reach your knees? I can't get all the way but with time am sure I will!

Also... what else is there other than crunches to make the abs strong? Lying on your back, legs straight and raising your legs????

OK - will go off to get a skipping rope and try it out. Many thanks!!

If you ever have any other quick (15 min) exercises (that I can alternate on other mornings) please let me know.

Default Exercise Videos for Women Over 40

For an easy and fun workout, I recommend trying one of Mirabai Holland's exercise videos (free clips are at MovingFree.com). I'm not sure a 15 minute exercise routine is long enough though. You may want to work up to a 30 minute routine. The American Heart Association now recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise 5 days a week!

    Hi!
Try Leslie Sansone's "WALK" VHS or DVD that you can borrow from the Library. She have variety of VHS/DVD including 10 mins. toning...1 mile equals 15 mins. You can change your daily routine like Walk one day, Tone the next day until you build up to do more. You can use 2 lbs. dumbells instead of balls to start toning. Walking around your neighborhood is also a good start
