Alright, so I have painfully found that boxing will kick your a**. I go to the gym for about two hours 4x a week. I would assume I'm in good shape right??? NOT! My friend is really into martial arts specifically Muay Thai. He invited me to go with him to work out yesterday and I was like yeah sure I could "hang" pfft. After 30min of just warming up I was dying these guys are INSANE! My thighs were burning and im use to running for about three miles non stop so i was in shock.
Then he says "are you ready to work out" wtf? really? I lasted an hour after that. I climbed a rope, hit a punching bag for five minute intervals then doing repetitions of push ups and sit ups. Man let me tell you that is a full body work out I could not get up to go to work today, of course I had to do but I didn't go to the gym today cuz i could seriously barely move. I watched them train for a little and they hit each other in the stomach and take it. whoa, now i know why they have to have hard-rock bodies. In any case I really liked the work out but i'll probably do it like once a month my wrists-forearm- and calves burn. Anyone else work out in any type of boxing/kick boxing or martial arts??

Not currently, but I used to take Tae Kwon Do and Sambo about 10 years ago. I wouldn't mind getting back in to Sambo, but it's hard to find a school for that. Other than that, I'd love to train to become a wrestler (WWE style) because you have to be in outstanding shape for that. Greg Gagne has a school in my area. I need to contact him about his rates.
But anything physical can be a good workout. It all depends on how much you want to put in to it. OG

My friend is in kick boxing. When she 1st started, she dealt with the soreness and bruises. Now she has adjusted and kicks a55 in her classes. She has really toned up too! She says its the best form of exercise she has ever done.

I'm a competitive amateur boxer. So I know exactly what you are talking about. I'm in the best shape I've ever been in and I love it.

I think by far one of the best type of workouts are boxing/martial art type workouts.
I have been doing karate for about 12 years and ju jitsu for about 8 years. The workouts are super awesome, but you also have to understadn your limits. With these type of workouts the instructors mainly focus on your "Spirit" and want you to keep going harder and faster even though your tired. If your a beginner i would say don't push your self to your limit just yet, you might end up feinting or overtraining. Keep consistent with it and progress slowly. You'll not only see amazing results, but you'll also develop the conditioning you need to do what those other students were doing. Keep at it and keep us updated on your progress ![]() Marci Last edited by Fallen1; 08-27-2008 at 08:48 AM. Reason: Remove outbound link |

I know this is an old thread, but I'm resurrecting.
So - I was thinking tonight, how fun it sounded to do some type of boxing/kickboxing. Sounds like just the ticket to taking some frustration out and not getting in trouble for it. I workout 4-5 times a week for 1 to 1.5 hours, so by any normal standards, I'm in shape. Although, according to the previous posts, it sounds like nobody is in shape once the start boxing/kickboxing and everyone gets their rear kicked. Anywho... My questions are... Are they both pretty much good serious full body workouts? The gym offers a variety of these classes, so I'm just trying to narrow it down. Is regular boxing mostly upper body and kickboxing lower body? What do you prefer, etc.? Just looking for some input.

Hi Lana,
Are you asking about a regular cardio kickboxing class or actually joining a proper boxing gym? The two are completely different. If you're just looking for a full body cardio class, then adding a kick boxing workout to your routine once or twice a week would be good. If you're looking to learn to box (or kickbox) Then that is a whole nother ball o wax. If that's what you want to do, then find a good gym, and just show up and the trainers/coaches there will help you out. (if they don't, go to a gym that has good coaches)

Aaahhhh - see, I knew there was a reason I asked.
AND - I honestly don't know... There's MMA centers all over around here, so there definitely isn't a shortage of finding a good one. Hmmm - I'm thinking about not biting off more than I can chew, start small and go from there though i.e. start at the gym...
