I've been coloring my hair only 2 years and doing it myself for about a year. Because of sensitivities I only use the non permanent color. When I was having it done professionally it lasted quite a while but doing it myself I have a problem with the hair along the side of my face. Those little short whisps of hair that would be in the sideburn position on a man, just don't keep the color. Within days they have lost some of the color. It isn't really, really noticable but it I 'm curious why this happens. Other wise my hair takes the color pretty well. I use a color that is fairly close to my own and it colors up nicely variated and last 4 to 6 weeks.
Another thing I'm challenged with is shampoo and conditioner. Again the hypersensitivites are a huge issue. I cannot use anything with any form of paraben (a preservative) I also cannot tollerate any perfumey scent, particularly floral, coconut oil cause problems as well. My budget will not stand the really pricey stuff. I was actually using Suave Color Care for a while, it's cheap but it actually doesn't have all the stuff I'm allergic to. I started having a crossover reaction to something and had to quit using it. I've been using Giovanni Triple Treat for years and love it. It says it's for all hair types and seems to be ok with the color. My hair is not damaged in any way, I rarely use a dryer or heat on it. I just don't know much about coloring, is there a reason aside from perhaps having to color more frequently, that the shampoos specifically for colored hair should be used? Or is this mostly advertising hype? |

Oh another question. I'd like to do an occasional hot oil treatment on my hair. How does this affect the coloring? Should I avoid this a certain number of days before or after I color my hair?

How often do you wash your hair? You should really only wash it about twice a week. The other days just put a little conditioner on the ends. The more you don't do to your hair, the better off it will be.
If you back off on washing it and use less shampoo you could probably afford to get a good natural kind at the health food store that doesn't have a lot of stuff in it.

Hey wild child to use color stay shampoo's will help the color stay if you can find one that doesn not have a perservative that irriates your scalp.
The reason why the salon color stays so well is cause it is professional and it just does. The demi permanent that you speak of has no peroxide that lifts hair color so you are really just depositing color. do you have more gray in your temples? If so the gray hair is course and does resist color and you can either leave it on that area a lil longer or get a demi permanent that is specific for (gray) color resistant hair. good luck

Thank you ladies. I wash my hair every other day but if I'm running regularly in the summer I have to do it every day. The Giovanni's is a good quality shampoo and I do buy it from the health food store although it is starting to be sold elsewhere more. A stylist who is into natural stuff recommeded it. I've tried some other shampoos from the health store's lines that say they are for color treated hair and simply didn't like them. Some had a scent I couldn't tollerate and others left my hair like straw even with the conditioner. There really isn't alot of selection in those products.
The shampoo line my colorist recommended was about $30 a bottle for shampoo and conditioner and while it didn't have the parabens, it did have coconut oil. I can tollerate that once in a while if I take benedryl, but don't want to have to take it every time I shampoo. What I'm really curious about is if you use a good quality gentle shampoo does it really matter if it's for color treated hair or not? I wish I could go to the pro regularly, he does an amazing job and custom mixes my color, but at over $200 for a cut and color my budget can't stand it! |
