    Red face My hairloss...

    Hey gals,
A little advice/inspiration needed, or just your stories...

Over the past couple of years, I've lost tons of hair, I'm 26 years old. It started when I stopped taking the birth control pill. I first noticed it on my temples...I've never had thick hair on my temples, but I slowly developed bald spots. At first it was pretty alarming, but I just started styling my hair different and put it out of my mind. About a year ago, I noticed that I was shedding tons of hair every day. I've probably lost over half of my hair. Luckily, I had very thick hair to begin with so my mane isn't that noticably thin. However, I recently developed a VERY stubborn case of dandruff, mainly on the very top of my head at the hair line and above my ears (that dandruff was more greasy/chunky). My dermetologist prescribed me a very powerful shampoo called Clobex (I think)...and it worked for the most part. I still have flakes, but when I use the shampoo they seem to go away. Although the dandruff on my crown is gone, I seem to be thinning there now. My part is becoming more & more shiny. My dermetologist said it was alopecia - and that the spots may or may not grow back. He offered injecting some kind of cortizoid into my scalp, which I turned down...it's not guarenteed and I really dislike needles. I've half accepted the reality that one day I might be bald...or close to it.
I guess I'm just looking for words of wisdom, advice or your stories. This is something that i know effects many women and men. But let's face it - it's far more socially acceptable for a man to go bald.

I totally hear ya on that last sentence and it's something that I started being painfully aware of at some point during college.

When I was about 20, I started losing my hair, and the cause for me was being ON the birth control pill. The "funny" part is that the specialist I went to didn't even consider that possibility and essentially told me there was nothing I could do and that I would be bald within a few years.

That depressed the heck out of me but I stopped the pills anyway to see if it would help. Sure enough, within a few months my hair started to grow back.

Do you think it would help if you went back on the pill?

Don't lose hope, there are so many women going through the same thing right now.

    Hi Mes,
I don't know if I want to go back on the pill at this point...I wonder if another huge change in hormones would do more bad than good. I've just been keeping my eyes on it...I'm still shedding, but not as much as I was about a year ago. I don't know if I have much growth on the top of my head though...that's where I can really notice it thinning. Thanks for the words of encouragement

It might very well be a hormonal imbalance, which is curable, without the birth control pill. Talk to a doc, eh?

Beautiful, I'm so glad that it's working! I remember that you had posted that it had some side effects, but it sounds like it's worth it!!!

My hair is so thin, and I'm going to try it.... why not?

I had really thick beautiful hair when I started on the pill. 10 years later, I felt like my ponytail looked like a rat tail. I used to not even be able to use a regular holder for my hair cause it was so thick. It hit me all at once when I came across an old pic. Shesh, what has HAPPENED to my hair?

So two months ago I went off the pill, AND started taking a high potency Biotin every day. This weekend at a family gathering, two people commented on how healthy my hair looked and that hadn't happened in years. I can already tell a significant difference in the thickness of my hair.

So, stay off the pill if you can. And go to the store (walmart has it) and get yourself some biotin. Start taking it every single day.

Oh yes, the itchiness. It pretty much went away, so I'm thinking it was new growth like we suspected. My mentioned that my hair looks thicker at the scalp, which would make sense if it's new growth.

Due to having an oily complexion, I have to wash my hair daily which is hard on it. But I also make sure to condition it daily.

Also, I've tried the EVOO thing once and plan to do it again. I just put some EVOO (not ALOT) on my scalp and massaged it in, let it sit and then rinsed it out.

But overall, if you're going to do nothing else, at least get some Biotin and take it daily. Like you said, why not?

Biotin, huh? I'm going to have to google it! I have to wash my hair everyday too. But I try to not use irons or hot air driers on it.
My hair used to be that thick too - I used to have to use two big elastic bands to get it up...now I use one of the tiny black ones. Ah well... Maybe my hair started thinning when I started the pill...I just didn't notice it at first because my hair was so thick.
I will definitely look into Biotin though, thanks for the heads up! What other vitamins are good for hair growth?

It took me years to actually see a drastic difference in my hair because like you said, it was so thick to start out with.

I checked my bottle this morning, and my Biotin is called Super Potency Biotin 5000 mcg. If you take one of those a day, maintain a good diet, and take care of your hair you don't really need anything else. Most "Hair Skin & Nails" vitamins contain biotin. But if you want more, anything good for your skin and nails (vitamin E) is also good for your hair.

Go to WalMart and get yourself some Biotin.
