Why don't you ask for a 5 minute free consultation.

A good phsycologist in my opinion can make you feel comfortable, and open to want to talk to them.

If you feel closed in, in that initial conversation (they say the first 30 seconds count) then you know your not going to open up too much, too soon with that person, or ever.

And, if you want to share your troubles here, it's not a bad place to talk about the things that bother you, after all you can't see us and we don't know who you are.

So, feel free to start here whilst your working out the best option for you.

Yellow pages, are tricky, large ads don't necessarily mean that they are the best, usually just the most costly and sometimes, the most busiest.

    Smaller ads can be beginners.

Check over the telephone the years that the practitioner has been practising in business for and perhaps look for smaller ads.

look around on net and you should find couple of forums where people are willing to help for nothing, which many a times includes phsycologist's too.

I forget the site, but when I was looking for someone to talk to there was a listing with some of their personal information, this helped me narrow it down as I knew i wanted a woman within a certain age range and also or the same race as me. I know that sounds a bit rude, but it's a very personal thing and I need to feel very comfortable with someone I'm going to talk to about certain things... lol unless it's in a forum. Also if you're comfortable, ask a few people you know, you'd be surprised how many people you know have sought some kind of councelling at some point.

Contact your insurance provider, they can give you a list of care providers in your area who are on your plan. Then you will need to do an initial interview or consultation. You need to have a good idea of want you want to accomplish. Different counselors have different approaches and you need one who's style fits your personality and needs. For example if you are trying to move forward through a difficult time in your life you need a different approach than if you want to explore why you keeping into a repeat situation. In one case you wnat help making and stick to a plan and not getting sidetracked while in the other you help digging in and figuring out what is making you tick.

A good counselor will get a feel for you pretty quickly and ask what it is you want to accomplish and then discuss how they would approach this. Then you can decide if their appraoch feels right for you.
