hi, I've been having a toothache for about 3 days now and its painful. My wisdom tooth on the bottom lefty side of my mouth has been growing for about 3 years now on and off.. it doesnt hurt all the time but only sometimes i guess when it breaks through the gums. I can see half of it and its not impacted. i wanted to know if i have to extract it? thanks!

Only a dentist can tell you that.

Talk to an orthodontist. But to answer the general question of whether or not wisdom teeth need to be pulled? No. I have all four of mine but they have not caused me any pain. So go see a professional.

No... wisdom teeth do not always need to be extracted.

Usually when a wisdom tooth is pulled out it is because it is growing the wrong way. Often they come in sideways, up against the tooth in front of it. This is called an impaction, which can cause pain and will affect the other teeth.

The only way to truly determine whether a wisdom tooth needs to be extracted is to have your dentist take an x-ray. A bite-wing will do the trick in most cases, some dentists might wish to take a panograph xray ( which x rays the whole jaw) as well. But it isn’t usually necessary.

Hi, i had all 4 of mine taken out at the same time whilst awake. I suffered for about 18 months with pain and infections, taking regular antibiotics pain killers etc. Dentist reccommended extraction because of the time span. Best thing i ever did even though needle phobia, since then i have had no trouble. Only your dentist can tell you if you need yours extracting

    Only your dentist will know.

I went for my regular check up and cleaning with the dentist and he took the x-rays because I hadn't had them for over 2 years...no problem. He came back and said my wisdom teeth were not on their way out of my gums yet but I would need to have them removed because there wouldn't be enough room in my mouth for them. So he gave me the option of waiting till they came out and he would extract them in the office like any other typical procedure, or I could be put to sleep and have them surgically removed at another place. Without him even finishing the sentence I said surgery haha. I must say the pain was unbelievable, it hurt so much but knowing that all I had to get was an IV made me so much more comfortable. No probing, no picking, no nothing, just an IV and the anesthesiologist asking me to count down from 10.

Of course I didn't use as much of the anticeptic mouth wash as I should have and ended up getting infected. That was dumb. Had to go back to the same doctor, they put me under again and cleaned out the infection and put gauze in the holes. If you are not okay with narcotic pain killers then do not opt for the surgery, unless you are one brave soul and can endure the pain without them.

A lot of times wisdom teeth are pulled because for some people they can be very difficult to keep clean. I had all four of mine pulled when they were still in the gums. I was knocked out for it and went to a party two days later and ate chips and salsa, so it wasn't really that bad. I have had teeth pulled while awake and while unconscious...I definitely recommend the unconscious route.
