Tinnitus is a ringing in the ear. Everyone experiences it, most commonly after a rock concert or in the loud workplace. Nothing to worry about because it will pass. Technically tinnitus is a symptom of inner ear injury, be it mild or extensive. If the ringing continues for more than a few days or even weeks (not in a stop and go pattern) it can be a sign of basic medical conditions like ear infections, to much wax, injury, some drugs can also cause Ototoxicity (damage to parts of the inside ear)...blah blah blah. However if the ringing is chronic, meaning has been around for years if not as long as you remember then it can be a sign of actual hearing loss. There is no cure in that case. The only thing a person can do to prevent injury as an 'at home remedy' is to use common sense. If it is loud then put ear plugs in, do not listen to your iPod so loudly, avoid standing by speakers at the club...common sense. There are specialists, namely Audiologists, who know all about this and if there is a concern over hearing then a person should consult with them.
