Ok so here's my first dilemma thread on here so please bear with me.

Back in October, I started on an exercise program: basically working out on an elliptical machine 2 - 3 times a week. Well, the first day around October 8th I worked out and got hit with a cold on the exact same day. It wasn't too bad, I guess, and it eventually got better about a week later. Well, just three weeks ago, I exercised 3 days that week, each time on the elliptical machine and even worked in a few small weights, 3 - 5 pounds. That day I started feeling kind of funny after my bf and I got home from dinner. I started feeling weak and tired. I drank water while I worked out and thought it might have been enough. Then the next day, my stomach was cramping really bad and I had a headache along with it. Soon it developed into flu-like symptoms- hot flashes, sweats, feeling like I had a fever, body aches, chills, weakness, fatigue, nausea, and some intermittent diarrhea and stomach cramps that lasted for about a week (sorry for being so detailed ).

I'm a lot better now believe me. Even on Thanksgiving Day I felt horrible and could somewhat eat. The days before that, however, I could barely get out of bed to use the restroom and fix a bowl of soup. It was pretty much all I lived on, that and crackers.

I know this was some kind of virus because my bf got sick with it but it only lasted a day for him. I was soo jealous (lol). We kinda joked and said it was the swine flu. Now I'm wondering if it really was that.

I just wonder since this has happened 2 times in a row that I'm overdoing it or maybe not exercising enough. I'll admit that I'm afraid to do it again because I might get sick again.

Some health conditions I have are Rheumatoid arthritis and elevated blood pressure. I hope someone can give me some insight on this. It's greatly appreciated.

instead of overdoing it - I think you might just be catching other gym-goers germs that they are leaving on your machine!

It could be that you caught something the first time, then when you went to exercise again your body wasn't ready to handle the physical activity so your immune system failed you and the same virus came back swinging!

Could be you were unlucky enough to catch two different bugs!

Do you clean the equipment/machines with disinfectant before you use them? You would be surprised how icky those things can be...

There is a very good chance that it was the swine flu. Right now it is the most common flu strain out there, every single person will come into contact with the virus but not everyone actually becomes sick. The fact that you are over the illness means there is nothing to worry about. We are all going to get a cold, the sniffles, aches, pains, irritated stomach ect ect ect around this time of the year. Maybe cut the gym time down but do not eliminate it.

Disinfect what you can when you are there. These days there are never too many precautions. The gym is a good place to get the nasties.

We were traveling a few weeks ago and before my kids touched anything on the airplane I rubbed everything down with an antibacterial wipe. The armrests, tray tables (did you know they only clean those things once a month?), etc. It's not perfect, but it made me feel better, even if I got the "You're crazy" looks from others.

The other thought, this happened to me a couple of months ago. I really kicked my workouts into gear and cut my calories down pretty low, but after about 3 weeks of that, I got so sick. I haven't been that sick at all, I was told it may have been a shock to my system and caused my immune system to conk out. Not sure the truth behind that, because I work our regularly anyways, but I REALLY over did it during those 3 weeks I think.

Happy, Happy New Year to you all!

I'm a little late replying here so sorry about that :\ Anyway I am feeling much better, and not long after I posted this I got hit by a nasty cold, one of the worst I've had in years and I'm really just now getting over it. All I really could do was lie in bed and play on the laptop every now and then (online gaming tends to cheer one up hehe). My bf caught it too and ended up missing several days of work, plus he caught the flu from where he works.

As for working out, I haven't been back down there in the workout room for awhile so I guess germs was the culprit and weakened my immune system a bit, thus catching that cold. I think the next time I go down there I will get some bleach wipes and clean everything off. Goodness knows what kind of junk is lurking around down there.
