Any reliable form of diabetes testing will require blood being drawn. They can test the amount of sugar in urine but that's not a conclusive test. Urine with more sugar could be the result of another cause and a mild diabetic drinking plenty of water may not have elevated sugar levels. It's a test that goes with other things not one used on it's own as a diagnoses. There are all sorts of ways to check for diabetes but they all involve drawing blood and some involve injecting things and then drawing blood multiple times. The fasting test is used because it involves the least work and needle pokes to still get a reliable result. Although the new A1C test could be even simpler (no fasting) and be more accurate.
I actually check my blood glucose on my own. Glucose monitors don't require a prescription and then I can test when I naturally haven't eaten in the required amount of time instead of starving myself waiting for an appointment. Plus 1 doctor appointment pays for a glucose monitor that works for years. However I don't have any symptoms of it that would prompt doctor visits. It's just found on both sides of my family and the doctors weren't yet testing me anyway.
