Any reliable form of diabetes testing will require blood being drawn. They can test the amount of sugar in urine but that's not a conclusive test. Urine with more sugar could be the result of another cause and a mild diabetic drinking plenty of water may not have elevated sugar levels. It's a test that goes with other things not one used on it's own as a diagnoses. There are all sorts of ways to check for diabetes but they all involve drawing blood and some involve injecting things and then drawing blood multiple times. The fasting test is used because it involves the least work and needle pokes to still get a reliable result. Although the new A1C test could be even simpler (no fasting) and be more accurate.

I actually check my blood glucose on my own. Glucose monitors don't require a prescription and then I can test when I naturally haven't eaten in the required amount of time instead of starving myself waiting for an appointment. Plus 1 doctor appointment pays for a glucose monitor that works for years. However I don't have any symptoms of it that would prompt doctor visits. It's just found on both sides of my family and the doctors weren't yet testing me anyway.

The amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood changes throughout the day and night. Your levels will vary depending upon when, what and how much you have eaten, and whether or not you have exercised. The categories for normal blood sugar levels are the following, based on how your glucose levels are tested:

A fasting blood glucose test. This test is performed after you have fasted (no food or liquids other than water) for eight hours. A normal fasting blood glucose level is less than 110 mg/dl. A diagnosis of diabetes is made if your blood glucose reading is 126 mg/dl or higher after two consecutive blood tests. (In 1997, the American Diabetes Association lowered the level at which diabetes is diagnosed to 126 mg/dl from 140 mg/dl.)

A "random" blood glucose test taken at any time. A normal blood glucose range is in the low to mid 100s. A diagnosis of diabetes is made if your blood glucose reading is 200 mg/dl or higher and you have symptoms of disease such as fatigue, excessive urination, excessive thirst or unplanned weight loss.

either of these tests can be made using the standard blood testing unit that can be bought in most large grocery or big box stores.
