During lunch today, I had a horrible sensation. The back of my head felt as if someone was pulling a string of nerves in my skull with their nails. On top of that, when I opened my jaw, there was a horrible grating noise in my ear and the pain was incredible. I immediately began panicking, but thanks to a friend, I was able to calm down enough to think about it.

It's been very cold recently, and I've had problems with my jaw before, though whether it was the right or left side, I can't remember. The right side of my face by my ear feels more swollen than the left side, and my jaw is really hurting, a dull ache. I feel like there's pressure in the right temple (which I've been feeling for a couple days), ache in my neck on the right side, and there's even pain in my ear, but I have no infection. I also sang a lot in the shower yesterday, something I haven't done in a few months.

I have a picture, and I will include it, do show in red where the pain is on my face (which has been blacked out because I'm gross looking today!).

I have been resting the left side of my face on the heel of my palm. Could this also have aggravated the problem?

Trying to get a hold of myself is really tough! But I'll keep trying.

The second the ear comes into play + dull aches in and around the area + general headache my first assumption is sinus infection or ear infection. They can pass but sometimes they can get so much worse pain wise so you may want to get it checked out by a doctor if the pain gets worse. The most you would get is a prescription for amoxicillin and maybe some mild pain medication.

Of course, anytime you put pressure on something for an extended period of time no matter the body part it will begin to ache and feel numb.

Whatever you think it may be do not jump to aneurysm, blood clot, tumor, or death. It will be none of those lol.

No, I know that aneurysms won't cause your jaw to grate like...Ugh, it sounded like a rock being rubbed against a cheese grater. Felt like it too. Just HURT so bad. It's still hurting. I'll go to the health center tomorrow and ask if I can get it checked out.

If it hurts that much, and the pain is unbearable and a solution can not be found...The easiest thing to do would be to see a doctor. Who knows, might just be a pinched nerve.

It might be, but it was just painful and scary. Now it just aches. I can't go to the health center for a check-up on it (my U's center closes around this time), so I'll just have to deal with it until tomorrow.

I've heard about TMJ (Temporo-Mandibular Joint) Disorders. Could that be a possibility as well? I've had ear infections before, and they've never hurt my jaw. I also don't have other signs of infection (Fever, moodiness from pain, trouble hearing, drainage).

I doubt it is TMJ related. The more common and simple explanation of sinus or ear infection would be more probable. Not all infections present in the same way, some you may never know you actually have because a common cold or typical headache can mask it.
