Can anyone help me overcome or recommend away to cure or somewhat reduce picking skin on my lips? I've done it on and off for years but lately I started again.I Do it mostly when i am stressed or feel overwhelmed.I also have anxiety to be specific i have generalized anxiety over certian things/events/what ifs/fears. I've been on meds for 8 years now ( since i was 14). This past year and the beginning of this year has been really hard emotionally on me. I pick till they bleed and it hurts SOO much...But i keep doing it then pick the scabs that form over it..I sometimes even use instruments such as nail clippers or tweezers to pick the skin.I also pick my nails and toes. I read the thread about nail/cuticle chewing. i thought i would post this thread. Is anyone having the same problem? can someone help me with things or suggestions. Can I prevent this or reduce it some?I also pick my toenails and fingernails. At the moment i've been using vaseline to help heal them but next day i start picking again. I don't know if the vaseline is helping or hurting. I think it is some form of OCD but not sure? Kind of embarrassed but figured i get alot of good advice on WH. so I might as well start here. By the way sorry if i posted this in the wrong section.

    Let's find some ideas:

    - The lips issue: try to often moist your lips with lipcare material, you know, the kind used for cold weather and so on. Use light lipstick to keep yourself from picking your lips. If they are dry then this will tempt you to do it, but if they feel smooth and soft you will think twice before you do. I do that from time to time some times out of boredom or when I watch a very interesting film (and I always regret it). Another idea is to chew gum, as this will keep your mouth busy.

    - The fingernails: I used to do that a lot as a teenager, now I rarely do it. How I got over it: I started polishing my nails. When you polish them they become harder and look so much nicer that first it hurts your teeth to bite them and secondly you see how bad they look if you bite them compared to the polished ones.

    - The toe nails: Wear socks all the time and don't take them off. If you do take them off just to pick on them then wear shoes for a while, just anything to make the whole process less convenient for you. Polish the toenails also.

Another idea is to use tape on the nails or band aid until they grow back. This way you won't bite them (or you will bite the tape/band aid instead and not the nails) and you will give them time to heal. Also, use a nail file a lot to make your nails as smooth as possible, as when there is an edge it is very tempting to bite it off and ruin the nail instead of just making it smoother with a nail file.

I hope this has given you a few ideas, as I've had those issues before and managed to deal with them like that. It's so worth it, you'll love it when you stop picking on them

What stressed advised you are great. I also find myself picking or biting my lips whenever I have time, and it hurts. Right now, I am "nursing" my lower lip for that reason. What I do is I make a mental note and whenever I feel like biting/picking on my lower lip, I consciously remind myself "it's painful", or "when husband kisses you, you won't enjoy it, so quit doing that". I do a lot of self-talk - sometimes out loud, sometimes just in my mind, so people won't think I'm crazy (well, not as much).

If you find yourself being frustrated sometime, even after trying this, have patience. This is not an overnight deal. If your insurance covers, go see a professional who can better gear you up with some replacement behavior. It sounds like OCD, but can be corrected.

Sounds like a nervous habit. Find something else to do with your hands? Learn some kind of needlework or tatting, something you can carry easily and just quietly do when you need to.

I like this Idea. Although I think tried it but i usually don't chew gum in the winter but I'll give it a try. Usually wh en i chew gum i bite the insides of my cheeks lol. just as i started reading this post i was picking my lips.

I think I've tried it all tape, glue, nasty nail polish any kinda nail file. It's hard to really STOP. i tried putting colored polish on them but it just makes them look shorter rather than nicer but i will try.

    - The toe nails: Wear socks all the time and don't take them off. If you do take them off just to pick on them then wear shoes for a while, just anything to make the whole process less convenient for you. Polish the toenails also.

Usually in the summer I will paint them like a hot color like pink or red. They usually grow out in the summer because their out in flip flops and are seen.

I mean I sometimes bite them until they bleed and pick my cuticles too. Whenever i have emotional stress i take it out on my fingers. been doing so since i was 7 i think.

Thank You i will certainly try them all. I've even put the bandaid and tapes and socks anything you name it. Just going through a really hard and emotional time this year. I should have your screen name Stressed.

I really hope something of this will work for you!
I currently have a band aid on my right thumb (was too lazy to reach for the nail file, but, hey, at least I have 9 nails left!).
I love this place, when I first came here I was almost desperate and didn't really believe in forums. But everybody here is so helpful and understanding Posting here certainly helps deal with stress.
