If you are talking book smarts memory the only thing that works is repeatedly doing things over and over to allow for the brain to easily access the information when needed.

If you are talking everyday get up and remember to go pick up a lemon from the grocery store type memory your basically screwed. The only thing that is going to up the alertness of your brain is being healthy. Drink water, remove certain delicious foods from the diet cause the nutritionist said so, sleep better, exercise...blah blah blah. It is the only way to make your body 'be alive' and respond to tasks more easily (aka memory, cognition ect). There is no other way to put it, there are no supplements, no teas, no dirt bark or twigs you can eat to improve cognition...it is just the way you live your life that dictates how mindful you are. If you feel sluggish your mind is sluggish, if you don't give a hoot neither will your responses, if you are a cup of sunshine then your mind is likely to be going a mile a minute with beneficial thoughts.
There are those who believe that dictionaries should not merely reflect the times but also protect English from the mindless assaults of the trendy.

I know for a fact that meditation techniques improve memory and concentration.
You may want to give it a try.
At worst you will gain some calmness
