    Question 24hr observation?! =(

    hi all,

my doctor has sent me an appointment to go in to hospital to the cardiology ward, she wants me to have my heart checked. She didnt really tell me what they are going to do whilst im there. I asked her if i will have to stay in overnight and she said no. The reason she is sending me is to make sure that the symptoms I am having are really due to a generalised anxiety disorder. The emergency department was quite concerned as i had a heart rate of 152bpm and nothing would slow it down until i felt sleepy. They then contacted her and advised her to send me for a observation.
The problem is that I am really, really terrified of hospitals. I have had a few bad experiences. When they kept me overnight because of my heart rate, I was opposite the room my mum died in, and my partner was not allowed to stay with me, I got about an hour and a half sleep due to feeling so uneasy. Even the thought of going honestly makes me feel sick and scared. It doesnt help that I have no idea at all what they are going to do?! My doctor has done all the blood tests so I dont need anymore as far as I know. Are they just going to monitor my heart rate with the machines?? Will I be there all day? Will my partner be able to stay with me?
Im really considering not going, but then I will worry if there is something wrong with my heart?! Im really really worried, has anyone here had a 24 observation and what happened?!

If they are asking you to be monitored then they are likely doing it as a simple precaution. The second your heart rate is that high they become worried because it is not generally a good thing to have that high of a rate unless it is the result of something obvious like exercise. You can let them know that you are uneasy with hospitals, countless numbers of people are. Obviously it is going to be difficult to not worry about things but you need to stay calm cool and collected otherwise the added anxiety could worsen whatever underlying condition there is....if there is. Extra blood work may be done to check for electrolytes and you will be likely hooked up to the heart monitors and the simple 'finger clamp'...no biggie there. 24 hr observation means you will be there all day and night but your just sitting on a bed with a nurse coming in every once and awhile to read the ECG while you watch tv and eat cookies. But again most of the time when the doctors ask for a monitoring they are doing it as a simple medical precaution and from what I have seen in case studies a large number of these incidents result in absolutely nothing. If there was something absolutely major happening they would be making a much much bigger deal about it which it seems like they are not.

No, a doctor is not going to trick someone into going in. Anyone can say no to a treatment but not many are going to tell a doctor no when all they have to do is sit in a bed for a bit watching tv. They say 24hrs because if something medical was going to happen to a patient then it would likely appear in that period of time, but a huge number of these "stay here for monitoring" cases result in the patient going home because medically there is nothing relevant happening.
