I have researched this and find conflicting info. Does healthy poo float or sink?

Basically, what I gather from what I've read is that if you eat a high fat diet, then your poo should float because that means your body is digesting the fat and passing it through your system. If you eat a high fat diet and your poo does NOT float, then that is a sign of disease or other problems.

BUT, if you eat a low fat high fiber diet, then your poo should sink because the density (high fiber) causes it to be heavier.

Well the verdict is in, mine sinks. I do eat a low fat high fiber diet. But I want to see what everyone else thinks about their own. So.....what do you know? Should it float or sink?

Mine sinks... I have no clue what is healthy or not though. We do have a book called "What's Your Poo Telling You?" in our half bath downstairs, it brings out regular chuckles when people are in the bathroom. We've received many compliments about that book in the bathroom. People find it very informative. lol It tells you all about the different poops and what they mean.

I have the same book and it is by far one of the funniest books I've ever read. Actually informative too.

    Hehe.

I dunno but I think as long as you go daily, it doesn't matter whether it sinks or floats. I had a nutritionist professor lady at my university whose theory was that you should go after every meal - what comes in should go out.

occularone - I knew you'd be on this thread like gnats on a peach. hehehe

I've heard that about going after every meal. I think that's ideal. But I eat lots of fiber, but just don't need to go more than once or twice a day. Shucks. lol

I ALSO read on several websites that your poo should come out in one long piece and should be 1-2 inches in diameter and 18 inches LONG!!!!!!!! Holy Moses! If I saw something like that in the toilet I'm pretty sure I'd run from myself!

I've never heard that, but would feel tremendously better about myself if it was true. I've been thinking something was wrong with me, because I eat, I poop, I eat, I poop, I eat, I poop... I pretty much have to be by a restroom within 5-10 minutes after eating and I won't use public restrooms, only in the most dire circumstances. Hubby is pretty adamant that it is not normal. lol Even if I have a snack like a cup of cottage cheese or something, I poop. It is rather inconvenient.

Geez, now that I've over shared about my bowels, but I did plan on talking to the Dr about it tomorrow. lol

Oh my gosh, I get excited if I poop two days in a row. Many a time my boyfriend has suffered hearing "Hey I'm doing pretty good, I pooped yesterday too!" since I got pregnant.
My poop delights me with all different colors, shapes, consistencies, and degrees of floatiness. I get everything from ochre yellow to pea-green, and during some intestinal issues there was a lovely tarry black with copious mucus. It usually sinks, though, despite all its other variation. Floaters are rare. My diet changes with my mood, so that probably explains the changes in my waste.

No, pooping more rather than less is definitely good! One thing that professor mentioned is that a lot of us end up teaching our bodies to suppress the urge to poop, simply because usually during the day we're out in public, and a lot of us have this THING against pooping in public restrooms.

I think the longest I've gone without going has been 5 days. Psychologically I felt terrible about it, but strangely I didn't feel any discomfort physically.

Acccctually....I noticed yesterday I went once during the day while at work. Then yesterday evening. Then this morning. So maybe I go more than what I thought I did. haha.

Lana, my girlfriend is like that. Every time we eat somewhere I know within 10-15 minutes afterwards she's going to say, "excuse me I have to go sit on the toilet". And I remember thinking something must be wrong with her, when really, turns out it's quite the opposite. So tell your hubby he's just jealous of your magnificent digestive system. lol

Technically it is supposed to be like a long snake...okay weird gross imagery but it is the case. Some physicians call it the "S" shaped poo, because it should be continuous and smooth. If you are constipated it will be like little rocks, that is bad and it means you need to eat more fiber. If it floats, that is bad and you need to eat less fatty foods. If you have diarrhea, that is bad and you need to watch the meats you eat to make sure there is no bacterial infections possible due to undercooked meat...also gotta watch the stress levels as it can trigger diarrhea. If your poo is like burning or painful, then that is bad and you need to lay off the spicy food.

Keep up the right diet with a good amount of fiber (the cement of the colon), fruits and veggies and everything should come out smoothly.
