Hello everyone, i know i havent posted in a while (been busy working full time and other stuff on top of that!) But i wanted to start a discussion on something that happened to me recently.

On thursday night my right arm started to feel funny... felt like when they put that tube around your arm for a blood test - very uncomfortable.

However i didnt think anything of it...

Friday night came, i was getting ready to go to a friends birthday, jumped in the shower...and suddenly my arm turned pitch black.... from my shoulder to the tips of my fingers.... not blue.. not purple... BLACK. My arm was swollen, double the size of the other and hard as a rock

I got such a fright, i tried to get out the shower as quick as i can to show my roommate...by that stage my are was blue and purple. She then took me to the emergency ward at the hospital

Well.... been here since then and possibly here all this week but after many many tests they discovered theres a blood clot in my neck where the blood comes out of my right arm.

The strange part is... i have never really heard of symptoms like that for a blood clot.... anyone else have any interesting or similar/general stories about blood clots

Blood clots are one of the top scary things in medicine because they are so unpredictable and hit very hard and very fast. You are lucky in the fact that it was just your arm and not the brain or heart because you likely would not have had time to make it to the hospital. I certainly hope you never have to experience this again.

    Saint,

You must have been so scared, I feel for you...

They are in-deed dangerous and you are extremely lucky.. Listen to what ever the Doctors tell you, you should do and take it easy..

Yeah thats exactly it... i feel grateful in a way that it was just in my neck and that i will now be on permanent medication to prevent more serious clots in future...some people may see that as a burdon instead but i honestly feel lucky, it was quite a scary experience as it is wouldnt want to experience it in a more serious spot

hello cw long time no speak! too long infact! yes the doctors and nurses are keeping a close eye on me.... i have a blood test every 6 hours... thats a break through for me as i am terrfied of blood tests. They also montior my blood pressure every few hours as well. I have to learn to inject myself as well.... like diabetics do... i have some medication to take that way after a course of warfarin. Its bizarre though... no family history....

    Well yes it's been forever

For a woman whom fears needles, I'm proud of you, because well I am not sure i'd cope with that

But, your right, it was in a good spot, got "spotted" and there are solutions, thinning the blood to keep you safe from any future harm and for that, we are all greatful

I think the pill has alot to answer for frankly... Maybe now is the time to also view your other options there...

Yeah absolutely... doctor already told me to start considering other options.... i already know what i'm going to get. The IUD.... at least this way the doctor will see there is just no other option for me personally. (At least that i am aware of)

What else can cause blood clots?? I pretty much know nothing about the subject

Genetics, bad diet, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, the list is super long.

So i have just gotten out of the hospital and found out part of the reason i got the blood clot. My first rib on the right side of my body, when my arm is elevated or in certain positions blocks a vien that flows blood out of my arm. So they have put me on warfarin for 6 months and i have just come off heprin and claxane but they talking about possibly surgically removing my rib.
