So ive been on birth control for a long time now.But i recently went into the doctors because something is up with me but they cant figure it out. They started off taking blood work and said everything is fine there, but i do have very low thyroid.I was put on meds for it,and it seems like they are starting to help.I got off of my birth control for one month to see if things would change with me (strangely enough they have) but now im afraid to get back on my pill.My sister was talking to her doctor 2 days ago and he told her, thyroid medicines kills the effect of birth control and even taking it properly you will still eventually wind up pregnant....Thing is...im getting close to the point of becoming sexually active, and my mom isnt too worried about it cause she doesnt really know i wanna be sexually active. It may be a long time before that happens obviously...but im just curious...If i should get on a different type of bith control.or if anyone has ever been told this...any kind of advice would be nice, cause as of now,my periods are miserable again without my bc,they are irregular again,i need it for my PCOS,and i may need it for sex down the road...but if it doesnt work..i dont really know what to do.I know my mom should call the doctor and ask,but she has pneumonia right now,and im hoping not to bug her with this.

Thyroid meds are not going to nullify the effectiveness of birth control completely. There is obviously more than one kind of thyroid related medication and certainly one could interfere with the mechanism of birth control pills but that is why you ask questions to both your doctor and pharmacist. I am on thyroid meds (Synthroid) for hypothyroidism and I am still on Alesse birth control. There is also many many forms of birth control as well so again just ask some questions. You are not going to automatically become pregnant....but that could happen if you have zero form of birth control.

Levothyroxine is Synthroid (or Levoxyl) so we are on the exact same thing, except for maybe a difference in the dose of Synthroid. You said you went off birth control for a month, did the doctor tell you to do that or did you do it just because you wanted to see what would happen? If you were feeling weird before the Synthroid and now your not since taking it then it is quite easy to assume that it is those meds that are making you feel better because they are increasing your thyroid function...and not anything to do with birth control pills.

If you are wanting to switch birth control methods then you would have to go to your GP or gyne to discuss the options as each one will work differently for each person. Saying one form works best is extremely difficult to do because a list of problems experienced by other people can be made in a matter of seconds based since again everyone reacts differently.

I got off it by choice...Thing is...Ive been getting UTI's every month exactly a week before my period, and then when my period starts,it goes away.Thats what the doctors were trying to figure out.So i got off my bc for a month to see it things would change and no UTI this month,i wasj ust fine.So i think im going to have to get on a different birth control anyways so i dont get these UTI's and its only alesse thats doing it to me.Ive been on different kidna of bc pills before.
