Hello. A few days ago, I found bed bugs in our mattress. I'm terrified because I really dont know where to start to get rid of that.

Moreover, I think I'm allergic to bedbug bites . It cause me huge urticaria.

Have you ever had bedbugs infestation? Is it really necessary to call an exterminator or can we exterminate them by ourselves?

    I need your help,

    Thank you.

Hi Maryln, welcome, here's what I found which I hope helps...

Before discussing how to treat a bed bug bite, let's talk about how to get rid of bed bugs.
The first thing to do is to wash all bedding in very hot water. Stuffed animals or soft toys that cannot be washed should be sealed in plastic bags for a couple of weeks.
The second step in getting rid of bed bugs is to vacuum everything. Vacuum the mattress, any upholstered furniture, and the drapes. Use the crevice tool on your vacuum to do the bed frames, the baseboards, and any furniture near the bed. Of course, vacuum the carpeting as well.
These steps will not remove all bed bugs and eggs and larvae, although it will remove most of them. You'll need to apply some sort of pesticide or other treatment to kill any remaining bugs. Be sure to follow the instructions on the product carefully on how to get rid of bed bugs.
Most treatment products for bed bugs use pesticides to kill the bugs. Permethrins and pyrethrins are common ingredients. While these are effective at killing bed bugs, they can be harmful to both humans and pets. You must protect your eyes and skin while using such products. Contact with your skin can cause itching, redness, swelling, and irritation. Prolonged exposure is believed by some to cause liver problems, respiratory problems, and even cancer.
People often ask us how to get rid of bed bugs using a natural product. They want to avoid the risks of traditional pesticides. They especially do not want to use potentially harmful pesticides in and near their beds. Natural products are safe for people and for pets, while still being effective at killing and preventing the recurrence of bed bugs

Google and check some natural methods, as well as exterminators and see what best suits you, financially and what you trust.

In the meantime, if anyone else has suffered this experience, we hope that they reply to your thread to answer ...

I've managed apartments for years and live in one of the top ten US cities for bed bugs (not a happy distinction). Dealt with bed bugs many times and thankfully not in my own space.
    Heres the deal:
They can live for a year without feeding and will hibernate, perhaps as long as 1-1/2 years.
They like wood and fabric, don't like metal or tile surfaces.
How clean you are has nothing to do with this although a clean, organized space is easier to treat and get them under control.
Vacuum thoughally, get all the corners and crevases, do this a couple times a day. Empty the vac each time, outside and bag and seal the material before throwing away.
You will HAVE to bag and tape shut (you don't want them in your vehicle), up ALL your bedding ,towels, clothing -any fabric items and take them to a laundry and launder then and dry at a 130 degrees for an hour. Items that can't be washed will have to be run through the dryer. Dispose of the plastic bags you brought them in in an outside dumpster and place in clean palstic bags and tape shut.
Dismantel your bed, remove the mattresses and lean against a wall.
Pull everything away from the walls, they love to hide in crevases and between the wall and floor. Empty your dressers bag the contents, pull out the drawers.
Basically you will need access to treat anyplace they can hide or may lay eggs.
Remove all outlet and switch covers.
I would use a professional service but you can buy products to treat yourself. Make sure it is listed for bed bug treatment. Go online and research - Harvard and some of the other Universities have good info.
The current protocal is 2 treatments a week apart, In between you will have leave everything you can bagged and sealed.
Treat your mattresses and upholstered furniture. Get into outlet and switch boxes, holes around pipes, baseboards, bed frames, dressers inside and out and under.
WHen you are done with both treatments encase your mattresses (both) with special bedbug cases. If there are any eggs that have survived, these will keep them where they can't get at you or feed. Leave the covers on for at lear 1-1/2 years.
    When yoo complete with treatment

I've had units treated successfully basically doing this. We work with professional exterminators. I'm on the run right now but will post some more info later.

PS every one on earth will develop an "allergy" the bites after being bitten but some people are more sensitve than others.
