First a confession: For 2-3 years I strictly wore Converse Hi Tops. I liked these shoes mainly because they were made of completely synthetic materials and came in fun colors. Also, I have narrow feet so the All Stars worked for that, too. The "problem" is that these shoes provided little or no padding or support. I think they are indeed meant for either a basketball game or other non longterm wear. I didn't do that and my feet may be paying the price. I have switched to a "real" athletic shoe and have noticed overall difference. However every so often, the top of my left foot tingles a little and I do have a couple small blisters. I did get some inserts at Wal-Mart and will be trying them in my new shoes. Unfortunately Converse insoles don't come out--something I (not to brightly) did not think of when I purchased the inserts!

    I would appreciate any suggestions.

    Thank you.

I'm adding to this in hope of getting a reply. I've been trying to find a comfortable pair of athletic shoes for awhile now and am having trouble. I am wondering if the converse "ruined" my feet or it will just take a while for them (feet) to adjust to "real" shoes. I know my feet could not have grown any. I would really appreciate any shoe ideas.

What type of socks do you wear and were you fitted?

I think you simply found a comfy shoe that fitted you like a glove, was cushioned correctly and rightly sized.

I can't see why you won't be able to find another brand at all, I believe the problem lies in the "type" that you purchased, our feet also do change in size as we get older and some are just not built for everyone, hense the bunions...You need shoes that have support and padding that are the right size...

Ask the shop assistants what do the Athletes wear? It may be that you have to pay a higher price that's all.

Thank you, CW very much. The past two years I have been unemployed due to a health issue and money is tight. I should admit to wearing these awful cheapy socks--for all I know they cauised more problems (or didn't help) than the shoes. I'm trying to rectify that as well. I didn't know feet size could change as we (continue) to age. I know sometimes olde rpeople "shrink" but never gave thought to feet. I'm in my mid 30's. I probably should have my feet measured by someone who knows more than I do about sizing. I do agree that every shoe(like other articles of clothing) can be different. I've just been shoe shopping at department stores and a couple of discounted shoe stores. I haven't been to a "fancy(er)" athletic shoe store. The blisters are on my little toes, which leads me to believe my toes were rubbing against the toe box and/or socks. I will try to get to an actual shoe store. again thank you and Happy Holidays.

    Couple of thoughts,

Seems to me that where you're mentioning the blisters sounds like one of two things, either the shoes are too small or you walk more on the outside of your feet.

It's not uncommon for feet to actually be different sizes, not drastically, but since shoes come only in half size, alot of times we don't measure both feet and only have a 50/50 chance of getting the size correct. Also, since you're only blistering on one side of your foot, that's where the pressure is most.

As for going out and looking at "fancy" shoe stores, I wouldn't do that just yet. Wouldn't recomment continuing to wear the All-Stars either as they were uncomfortable when I was a kid and are just as bad 50 years later. But, many stores carry Nike, Reebok, Adidas, Converse, etc. You can easily go to a Foot Locker or Champs, or wherever and see what they have on sale.

Also, if you're just looking at everyday use and not sports related, maybe look at low tops.

Thank you Pretzel for the good advice. Can I ask what you mean by "walking on the outside of my feet?" I think my left foot (more of a problem foot) may be a teeny bit bigger than the right. Until I started wearing the Converse, I used to wear Avia's (Size 9) which always felt comfortable to me. The "problem" was it was becoming harder to find non-leather styles. That was why I tried (for the first time in my life) the Converse. The only reason I liked the higher top was because (I thought) it offered more support and seemed to keep my foot in place better. I am indeed just looking for everday use non sports. Lol, yeah I shouldn't wear the All-Stars anymore. What's semi-weird is that initially when I put the Converse on after a good month of not wearing them, they felt good. Unfortunately that is no longer the case. I've been wearing a pair of Asics which cheap Wal-Mart insoles and very thin socks (to compensate for the insole raising my foot). Anyway, I will keep looking and trying on. I really do appreciate everyone's help.

Actually you were on the right track before you switched to a "supported " shoe. An over supported muscle gets weak. These build up shoes actually weaken your feet and ankles and are the cause of many injuries. Do a search on barefoot running and you can find the research to support this. Get yourself a pair of Vibran Five Fingers or other minimalist shoes and you should do much better.

WC. forgive me if this sounds completely dense but are you saying that the (cheap) insoles possibly hurt my feet? They never felt (feel) exactly comfortable. I think the "old tried and true" Avia's were the way to go. I'll be on the lookout for them. Thank you for your ideas.

I'm saying that shoes with all the "support" actually make your foot muscles weaker.

I wore converse for years and still do occasionally. They are terrible for your feet. Look into getting custom inserts made for your foot, that will help a lot. I've had custom orthodics since I was ten, for high arches. I agree with WC that that your feet should do what they naturally do without help. But some people's feet just aren't right. If you have good feet otherwise, be sure to wear good shoes, stretch a lot and rub your feet daily.
