I had a very similar problem, which the lack of sleep started causing migraines. I went to my doctor who recommended I go see a neurologist. I would go see your health care provider to make sure nothing serious is going on. Then they can decide the best way to treat yours.

I cannot seem to sleep well either. My lack of sleep though is completely due to school, I am always up writing a paper or doing research or stuck in a lab checking plates, or studying for the next midterm or final. It is just all consuming, and always a worry in some way. The only thing that I have found that helps a bit is to drink peppermint tea about an hour before I go to bed. I know the tea itself does nothing to make me sleepy but I have tried to make the association that it will and that drinking it is a relaxing and comforting thing. So for the past month or two I have been drinking it at that same time every night to create that association that tea = bed in one hour. Helped me get a couple extra hours of sleep every night so far but not a whole lot.

If the reason I can't sleep is stress, I can usually get to sleep after having sex. After sex I'm completely at ease and contented; then I can just cuddle up and go to sleep.

If it is diabetes that is keeping me awake, the only thing I can do is try to stabilize myself so I can go to sleep without worrying. I've had a fear of dying in my sleep from a diabetes related hypoglycemic event since I was 10 YO. I can never go to sleep if my blood glucose is not stable.

dark and quiet environment, free from distractions (TV, computer, conversation, etc), cool temperature, and consistent sleep schedule (go to bed about the same time, get up about the same time - every day) all help me get the sleep I need.

I don't always get the privilage of this sort of sleeping environment, but when I do I get the best sleep EVER!

I deff cant sleep either, I go to bed at about 6am every morning, and wake up between 5-6pm...it drives my parents crazyy!! But i'm really tired the rest of the day. It sucks, especially when I have to go back to college, and wake up early for classes, and practice. Whatusually helps me go to sleep is having the tv on low volume...I think its just the glare of the tv that has to be on for me to go to sleep. If i try to sleep in silence, I just start thinking alot about everything, and it stresses me out?:P

I have a great "schpiel" about not being able to sleep. Pull up a chair I'll give you the short version(ish):

Since birth I was a very deep sleeper. Tornados and my older sister kicking me in bed didn't do a thing. It was like for 7-8 hours I turned into the living dead. It was awesome! I slept through anything. You name it; it didn't wake me. Well, ever since my 7th grade year (very dramatic due to a girl who made it her life's mission to make mine ) I've had problems sleeping at night (terrible insomnia). I went on Seroquil for about 2 years for depression and insomnia. Bad idea!! They don't tell you that you can gain upwards of 50-100 pounds if you're not careful! Got off that after blowing up like a balloon and switched to Trazadone. That seemed to work great at 50mg/night for about 2 years. Slowly I needed to bump it up to 100mg, then near the end I was taking a trapezoid shaped 150mg pill each night just to sleep! TERRIBLE! It was expensive, insurance covered most of it but I still have to fork over nearly $250 each month. Finally I got sick of being dependent of drugs (and being poor because of them...) so I just stopped. Wow... worst week ever... I couldn't sleep, couldn't nap, not even a 15 minute cat nap! I was tired all the time, I cried all the time, and I was irritable. Instead of sleeping like the living dead, I now looked like the living dead. I finally went to a family owned health store (I hate chain stores. They don't care about people, just sales) and told the owner what was going on. He recommended something called "Dreaminol" and gave me some samples (See, thats what I love about "mom and pop" places!). About 15-20 minutes after taking it that night it was like I put on fuzzy slippers, a warm fuzzy blanket, and sent me off to "warm and fuzzy" land. I zonked out and didn't wake up until morning. I took 2 each night for a few months, went down to 1 a night, then finally I went off completely and I think I'm cure of insomnia! The only time I have trouble now is if I'm stressed out of my mind. That's why I keep some handy for times like that.

Okay, so it wasn't all that short of a story but it's a success story and I think that's what counts. Funny thing is, the same pill didn't work for my fiance. Go figure. You just have to find out what's right for your body.
