I have had this problem consistantly throughout my life too. There are a few things I have found to help.

Probabaly the most helpful is drinking coffee first thing in the morning. I hang out in bed before I eat breakfast and drink a couple cups of coffee. Generally gets things going and if I don't have a BM before breakfast I normally will after.

The second is Fiber Con. They are fiber tablets. They are gentle enough to take daily and don't make me bloated or gassy. I take them at night with dinner.

    =) Hope this helps.

I've had trouble with constipation all my life too, you have my sympathies.

Lots of water is important of course (though be careful and don't over do it), as is fiber.
And I will second the suggestion of having a short strong coffee first thing in the morning before eating anything. It does work for me on a regular basis.

But for some reason it is more effective if I can be alone. If my partner is up and chatting with me for some reason my digestive tract just won't do it. Must be shy...

Also, stretching your core and gentle rhythmic massaging of the abdomen can help.

    Good luck.

Since coffee is a diuretic I'm not sure the pros of adding it to your diet, especially if you're a non-drinker now, out weigh the cons. Which says nothing about the increase to your food bill, staining of your teeth, bad breath, etc.

I take caffiene pills twice a week and magnesium oxide pills 3 times a week. Problem solved and I was actually in the ER for side effects from severe long term constipation. Fiber made things worse because it did not trigger my bowels to move more so it sat there making immovable rocks. Saline laxatives made it easier to move things but again did not trigger bowel movements so it just made goo that squished around and made no progress. Magnesium was the solution and the magnesium oxide does the best job without causing side effects you can get from some long term laxative use. I was having gallbladder and heartburn issues because I'd been on miralax and magnesium citrate so long.

Wow, it sounds like I could have written this post! My constipation has gotten so bad that I've developed hemorrhoids and had to have them removed (plus there back, so, yay! >.>)
I find the BEST thing for me is:
    1) Take a few magnesium pills to get things going initially (Phillips makes them I believe). Don't get dependent though!
    2) Start taking a stool softener each morning OR night as a preventative
    3) Drink plenty of water a day
    4) Start getting as much fiber as you can. I do the Fiber One bars or Chia seeds (local health store). Does wonders!
    5) If you're SUPER backed up: Go get a bottle of magnesium citrate soda and drink ALL of it. It's terrible stuff but it'll loosen it all up (This is my last resort if all else fails. I HATE hate HATE the taste. Just thinking about it makes me cringe... yuck!)

Well, that's sort of my hit list for keeping my system regular. The chia seed... whoa... it's awesome stuff. You can take it every day to begin with then every other day or twice a week as a preventative. That's what I do. I buy it in bulk, buy vegetarian gel caps, and fill them myself. I save $5.00 that way.

    Good luck!

What good is a wiener dog if he's not spoiled rotten?
