Default Grandpa Needs to Gain Weight....Ideas?

So he's in the nursing home 2 hours away. He gets frequent visits, but they have lessened as I expected they would. Today it had been 4 days since my mom visited and she couldn't believe how much weight he had lost. He's much more mobile now, so he's burning more calories and is eating less. They don't get snacks, and he doesn't eat his meals great.

Ensure Plus has around 350 calories per drink and we've been trying to make sure he drinks those (as much as you can make sure from 3 hours away), but he truly needs more.

We are considering buying Ensure Plus, pouring it out into something and mixing some other high cal things in with it like whole milk, powdered peanut butter, etc then pouring back into bottles and taking to him. But it would be much better if there were something out there ready to drink that we could buy.

    Any ideas?

Google "weight gainers". The high range of these is over 600cals per serving. Fat and protein varies greatly because it depends on your needs. I'm not sure the correct range for this situation. You may want to ask a nutritionist about ideal protein and fat grams in the diet since getting these too high could cause stress on internal organs which is potentially bad for the elderly. A risk with all meal replacement or supplement shakes. Near the top of the google results will be a bodybuilding supply store that's a good source for things like that and has articles, comparisons, reviews, and polls about the products to help you pick the right one for your needs. There is also another nutrition site I use for such things if you want it but you have to do independent research since they only provide what information the manufacturer gives them and a pretty slow forum.

Is there any high calorie food that he likes and he can handle? Is he digesting food good? Can you give him most any type of food per the regulations? There is plenty of high calorie food, just look at all the super sized people.

LOL he needs to gain weight, not murder himself!

Good question though, how's his eating/digestion in general? Can he eat pretty much anything, but in smaller quantities?

When he was at home my mom aunts and grandma made sure he snacked alot. He was basically sedentary and was snacking and drinking fluids regularly. He was not at all overweight, has a fast metabolism. But now, he doesn't get routine snacks nor drinks unless it's meal time and isn't eating much of his meals (he spent 60 years getting grandma's cooking....I expect that nothing compares, plus the workers don't make sure he has his dentures in, therefore eating can be difficult I'm sure). This in addition to his increased mobility, he's just not getting near the calories he needs. I will check into a nutrition store, I tried to find somethings online but found nothing any more high calorie than Ensure Plus. Thanks for your helpful response!

He can eat pretty much anything as long as they make sure he has his dentures in. If we were closer, someone could be there daily to bring him a milkshake and other foods we know he enjoys. They don't have their own refrigerators so anything you bring that needs refrigeration has to be taken into the nurses station hospitality room and then you're depending on them to have the time to give it to him. He's very quiet, doesn't say much, complain etc....so I can see him being the type to sit there all day and say nothing no matter if he were hungry or not. He also doesn't like to put people out, so if someone says "Would you like me to bring you something to snack on?" he'd probably say "Oh no I'm fine". But if we were there, he'd eat it. I've told my mom to bring his weightloss up to the nutritionist on staff. They have to notice as it's alarmingly noticeable to us, and they are the ones that dress him and bathe him every day. Otherwise, the treatment there seems quiet well. The men are always very clean, the building is very clean, no yucky smells, etc. He's always well moisturized and groomed. But this weight thing.......... when my mom sent me pics of him last night I broke down in tears (and am about to typing this).

I have to figure out some way to keep his body from starving.

I'm not sure, but maybe a homemade trail mix would work made of dried fruit, such as dates, etc. Keep away from things that would cause problems with dentures and try to get things that would soften enough to swallow if held in the mouth. If it is pure calories, maybe something like fudge brownies would work. If he can get enough calories, he probably can go a little light on the proteins. His losing weigh probably means he is not getting enough carbs and is losing muscle mass because of that.

Not making sure he gets enough nutrition almost sounds like elder abuse.

It would be a neglect charge not abuse but yes my mom got a nursing home in trouble for something similar but worse with my great grandma who had been taken care of by my grandma until she passed of cancer. My mom moved my great grandma and then got busy with the funeral and came back to find she'd lost a lot of weight and was over medicated trying to eat her oxygen tubing. Trust me you did not want to be on the other end of that discussion....

Can't you take him some buscuits, fruit, lollies that he can keep in his draw, and eat over a week?

You do know BD that when a person goes into a nursing home, it's such a dramatical change for them, they lose weight through stress, knowingly or un-knowingly, it often really doesn't have anything to do with food.

My ex's Grandma ate 3 meals a day, had fruit, lollies in her room, and she still lost alot of weight...

It's a different world than what he is used to honey and I know this is very hard for you and I'm sorry.

That's very sad. The place seems genuinely involved in the well being of the patients, so I don't want to say it's neglect or abuse....yet. During a visit yesterday, the nutritionist met with my aunts and discussed ways to supplement his nutrition. Hoping for the best.

CW - yeah, we've done that, but his thought processes aren't clear enough to be sitting out in the lobby and think "Hmm I want one of those cookies I've got in my room". You know what I mean? When we visit, we bring him things to eat that he likes and ensure that he eats, but we're not always there. I'm going to go one day this week and visit... and will bring him some good food for supper. Apparently he's LOVING his new chair. And that makes me so very happy, because I know he wouldn't have it if it weren't for my mom. And now he has, as the nurses call it, the "BMW of wheelchairs". Love him!!

Hey BD, yeah the ensure's will help some. But also having him take a senior multivitamin will also help. Also don't be afraid to talk to the faciliy's dietician about this also. If need be, have his doctor also talk to the facility.

Most facilities will accomodate for this.

Remember, it's not so much the calories, but the right calories. Just because he's older doesn't mean that his diet is that much different than anyone else's. Ask yourself, if you had to put on weight in a healthy manner, how would you do it.
