Hi im 26yrs old and im a carrier of DVT -deep vein thrombosis, and im on the Depo-Provera injection as contraception as i cant go on the Pill but when i went to the doctors she told me that if i stay in the Injection or go on any other contraception there is a higher risk of me getting DVT so i have been advised to be Sterilized i really dont know what to do as i am only 26yrs old i do have 2 daughters so i wont be missing out on having children but as im only 26 it worries me incase i want more children (but as of now i dont want any more) so as you can see (read) my head is all over the place :/

Racking my brain right now because just the other day, I saw a woman (a very physical fit woman) who developed DVT. She talked about the ways she deals with it and "surpresses" it so to speak. I just can't remember who she was or even what show it was on.

What is the benefit of being steralized? I guess they are thinking then you don't have to worry about birth control. Tis true that hormonal bc can lead to blood clots, and for someone with DVT that's even more a horror story. Got two little girls that need you. Are you married? Have you considered discussing with your husband about a vasectomy? Seems that would solve the problem, is basically an outpatient procedure, quick recovery, little discomfort, and most often reversible.

What about an IUD? They work for years at a time and can be taken out any time. There is a version with NO hormones too.

Why didn't your doctor take into account condoms or other forms of birth control? A second opinion sounds like it's in order.

I think you should seriously consider speaking with another doctor.

Between the advice you've been given here (sterilization, for a 26 yo, REALLY?!) and the advice you were given regarding your low libido in your other thread, I must say your doctor is not giving you the best direction. You're not being given the full story by this health care provider, and he or she is doing you a huge disservice.

There are many options out there for you as far as non-hormonal BC that are NOT permanent like sterilzation is. Find a doctor who is willing to work with you and educate you on ALL the options available to you given your health risks, so you can make a well formed decision about your sexual health.
