    For the last several weeks I've almost become addicted to certain smells. I say almost because so far it's not something that is threatening my livelihood - relationship/work. However, I do feel that if it the urges get any stronger I may need to consult a physician.

    The smells I've been craving are new carpet, new automobile smell, rubber such as tires and new shoes, cold air, and publications (magazines/books). I have a stack of magazines under my desk here at work and throughout the day I'll pick them up and sniff them. At home we have two bedrooms that we keep closed off. These bedrooms have new carpet in them and I find myself going down the hall several times during the evening, opening the doors and taking big "wiffs". When I'm in my vehicles, even though it is Winter and cold out, I will turn the air conditioning on full blast just so I can smell the air.

    I've been doing some research on the old reliable ( ) internet and so far the things I've found is that this may stem from some kind of vitamin/mineral deficiency.

    Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

    Ive had that! I usually crave the smell of red meat. But it has to be raw...I read up, and it could be a deficiency of some sort. I would go to the doctors.

    DONT EAT THE CARPET OR MAGS! That would be a disease called PICA

    Please go to the doctors fallen...its also a preggo symptom.

    Thank goodness I've never had the urge to eat the stuff .... It's just the smell I crave. Once I take a breath it's, for the lack of not being able to describe it any better, like a sense of calm and aaahhhh that I get. Strange I know.

    I've always seemed to have a heightened sense of smell. I smell faint things others don't even get a hint of.

    I can count out being pregnant. I had my tubes tied years ago and my hubby had a vasectomy years before I met him. There would be some splainin' to do if that were the case.

    As far as I know most addictions to certain odors is due to chemical deficiencies in your body. Some addictions can be related to past association of such smells with pleasurable circumstances (say the odor of a woman you have been intensely intimate with, even her sweat). Some intense likes of odors don't seem to have much basis. I like the odor from freshly pumped gasoline, but I never indulge in it as I would get a headache and it probably would kill brain cells.

    Wierder things have happened, dear. My aunt and uncle were both "fixed" and about a year later, she was pregnant.

    When you smell carpet, or the cold air, does it remind you of something from your childhood? It could be something as simple as a comforting memory. You said you have a srtong sense of smell, so scents could trigger a memory without you knowing it.

    I make no allusion on what Fallen likes or not, I only talk about a situation I know personally. I know you are kidding.

    LOL - I LOVE the smell of bandaids (clean ones, obviously) and burnt matches! I don't know why, but I do!!!

    I love the smell of new magazines and books, candles and cleaning products. I shop for cleaning products alone because the husband is slightly embarrassed that I am *that lady* who opens up the Bounce or All to smell it before buying.

    New car smell = Coconut air fresheners.
    They are kind of hard to find, and if you do, make sure it isn't mixed with pineapple/mango/fruit.

    As, I work in an Auto Parts Store, you can get the Little Tree Air Fresheners in Coconut, with nothing else mixed in , Also you can get what the call New Car fresheners. In My Company, we also have the Air Fresheners ( some ) in small spray cans, Coconut, Vanilla, Black Ice and New Car smells.

    Also Walmart and I believe Kmart carry them, the Trees, not sure of the cans , in their Auto parts section of the stores.

    Craving the smells, is still considered a form of PICA, or so it says. It also says that you may be Vitamin Deficient, try taking a Multi Vitamin with Iron and even some Calcium supplements .

    But just recognizing a smell and having it bring back memories, usually isn't anything to worry about.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~
    I swear I smell in my Sleep/ Dreams and sometimes it will be so strong that I will "wake up" and go make ( it ) to eat. Usually it is Garlic or Salt related. And rarely remember getting up and getting something to fulfill the " Craving ". I have been diagnosed with NED, Nocturnal Eating Disorder, kinda a Sleep eating instead of Sleep walking .. lol
    After many years of waking up with a Can of Chili or Spinach or Sauerkraut or Black Olives, sitting next to my bed with a spoon or fork in it, half eaten . And never remembering getting up and getting it or opening the can even.
    I finally asked my Dr, embarrassed as all get out . lol. He looked at me strangely the first few times I had mentioned it. Then I researched Night/ Sleep eating and saw the NED.
    Took a printout to my DR. and he researched it too and then diagnosed me with it.He'd never heard of it, now he is well read on it. And actually thanked me for the info.
    I have managed to curb most of it through making a Plate/ Bowl before bed of what I normally used to find and put it on the nightstand. This way I am not Sleep Walking to Sleep Eat .
    Our Bodies are very Strange and Wondrous, as CW said .
