Okay... so I'm 16 years old, and I guess a lot of girls have body image issues, I usually don't. Earlier tonight I nearly made myself throw-up and it really scares me because I don't want to be self-destructive. I didn't actually do it but my finger was in my mouth & almost to my throat. I'm wondering if maybe it has to do with stress from school and stuff cuz I don't think it's all body image. I'm also wondering if I should talk to a school counsellor, even though this has never happened before. Does any one have any advice on how to avoid this?

    hello there,
well it might not have much to do with body image persay but i think it could have something to do with control. i know when some girls develope anerexia they in a sense have "control" over the amount of food that they take in because they feel they have lost control of everything else in their life. hence a control issue. when life gets really stressful and believe me it can and i know 16 can be a hard age your most likely under some stress and felt out of control at that moment and i think you decided to take control of something, anything so be it sticking your finger down your throat. please yes i think it would benefit you to speak to a counsler on this matter and whetever else bothers you. that's why they are there. to help you. also whatever you discuss with the counsler should be confidential. no one else will know unless you want them to. take care of your self. Lynne

You are in the beginning phase of self-destruction. It begins in the mind. I commend you for reaching out for help. I want you to get a journal and write down exactly how you felt before you wanted to do this. This will help you understand why you did it. Just like you talked (in your mind) yourself into starting this behavior you can talk yourself out. Also, you mentioned you thought you may need to talk to someone. You didn't mention your relationship with your parents. If you don't feel you can talk to your parents, than maybe a school counselor or church counselor can help you talk your feelings out. Don't talk to kids because it may get out and if you hear negative gossip about yourself it will make you feel worse.
There are positive ways you can improve your self-image without harming yourself. If you need diet tips, there are many on this website and health magazines. When you wake up in the morning speak positive things to yourself. Like "I am beautiful" , "I have a lot to offer to the world now and as I grow up", and "I was born for a purpose and I want to stay healthy to reach my purpose in life". Write us back and let us know how you are doing. You may not know us, but a lot of us care about each other and we care about how you are doing. Have a good day!

Thanks for helping me out. This feels weird cause usually I'm the one helping other girls with this kind of thing. I don't want to talk to my parents because I have a really good relationship with them and I'm afraid of ruining it. I'm going back to school tomorrow so I'll ask where the counselor's office is. I've been listening to a lot of music which seems to keep me calm & I haven't wanted to throw-up again. I'm thinking it was stress so mayb e I should try yoga?

If you have a good relationship with your parents you can NEVER ruin it. I have a son and I do all I can to keep communication open. I also do volunteer work with kids and they have a special place in my heart. You may not want to talk to them now, maybe at a later date. Everybody needs somebody to talk to every now and then. It's good you are going to try and seek help. If the chemistry isn't good with this counselor, then try another one. It's important that you feel comfortable. Exercise is a great stress reliever. You can also try chamomile tea (celestrial seasonings brand -can buy at the grocery store) to help you relax. You will only need 1/2 cup. Relaxation music helps me too. Try to organize your study habits as much as possible to keep from feeling overwhelmed. Space it out where you are not craming. Get help with being organized if you can. That also keeps stress down. Feel free to talk to me (us) anytime. Happy New Year and take care!
