Yes, I just recently bought a book called "1,001 home remedies" It's written by "doctors, nurses, pharmacists and real-life experts like you!"
You can look things up in the index, I looked up menstrual problems and it listed a few useful tips, for example;
- to ease cramps you can take mag phos (phosphate of magnesia), pulsatilla, nux vomica, red raspberry-leaf tea, cramp bark (viburnum opulus), camomile tea or ginger.
1000mg calcium citrate and 500mg magnesium everyday is also supposed to help. And 1000mg of evening primrose oil.
It also says during the last 2 weeks of your period take 40mg black cohosh extract (also used for menopause symptoms) 3 or 4 times a day.
- to deal with bloating take vitamin b6 during your period and eat diuretic foods such as asparagus, garlic, dandelion leaf, celery, watercress and parsley.
- to manage the flow take 1000mg vitamin c and 1000mg bioflavonoids. Also chasteberry.
Then I looked up PMS and it said pretty much the same thing;
- do 20 to 30 mins of aerobics everyday, eat less salt, cut back on alohol and caffine, eat high fibre foods, drink more water, cut out sugary snacks.
- Take 500mg calcium and 250mg magnesium a day. Calcium reduces headaches, mood swings and muscle cramps. It also makes you sleepy so is best to take at bedtime.
Many women with bad PMS symptoms lack magnesium which works with the calcium to help control muscular activity. A combination of both minerals helps to contain symptoms.
- Take 50mg vitamin b6 to reduce irritability and depression. It calms your nerves by increasing your supply of serotonin, the mood regulating brain chemical. Also helps with fluid retention, breats tenderness, sugar cravings and fatigue. Good food sources include protein foods (meat, poultry, fish) and fortified breakfast cereals.
- Take 1000mg evening primrose oil 3 times a day.
- Also balance your hormones with chasteberry (vitex) supplement. It is prized for its ability to improve PMS symptoms by bringing hormones back into balance. Take 1 or 2 225mg a day when not menstruating. It can take up to 6 months to feel the benefits.
- Use black cohosh extracts for a week to 10 days before your period begins, take 2 40mg capsules a day with food.
- St.Johns Wort - a natural antidepressant can help with mood swings. Take 300mg 3 times a day.
At the back of this book there is a chapter called "household healers" it's about herbs and things you can find at home or in the supermarket. The ones listed to be helpful for menstrual problems or PMS are;
Camomile,
Epsom salts,
Evening primrose oil,
Ginger,
Omega 3 fatty acids,
