    Default quit smoking!

I have been trying to quit smoking on and off for about 5 months now. Nothing seems to work. I don't know any one who has quit smoking to talk to about it. I feel like I am surrounded by people who smoke and think it's great. Parents, friends, ect. I have been sick for over 2 months and have swollen tonsils, I am sure smoking isn't helping and I really want to quit. Is there any advise anyone could give me? I don't really want to go to things like meetings ect. I want to be able to do it on my own. Is there anything that helps, or anything I can do during cravings?

Hi Dani, i am where you are, talking about it, talking and talking and not doing. I know that it always has to do with "you have to want to" but my throat is sore as well, not from tonsilitis but ulcers and i just have to, a rebelious side i think says na tomorrow, tomorrow never comes.

I have tried before and this is what i am going to do as it worked for me, then "The Little Book of Quitting" by Allen Carr.. He basically says it's a little monster each time the craving comes go "Yippee i'm a non smoker" feel it.

I can do the journey with you if you like, help each other, just keep posting and pick a date, ie) Monday is the day....

I also hate those quit line things because well they are brilliant and helpful but i guess i have pride.

But, i'm willing to give it a go if you are...

I think that sounds good. Yeah picking a day is a good idea. What I've been doing for the past few weeks is try to quit whenever I finish the pack that I am on. That method doesn't work very well. I think I am going to pick the 22nd of April b/c it's earth day haha. I feel like the day I pick should be a holiday or something. But we should write back and say like how it's going or w.e.
Another reason I really want to quit smoking is b/c I am moving in with some friends next semester and you can't smoke in the house, also none of these friends smoke. So it would be kind of a pain going outside all the time and then getting dirty looks when I come back in ya know. So I want to give myself enough time to work through it before I get to that situation.
Let me know how Monday goes. Good luck!

Ok, my advice is probably a bit strange, but I was/am addicted to tobacco even though it wasn't the tobacco I cared about smoking!

I started smoking stuff that didn't have any nicotene in it - you can probably find some smoking herbs of some sort in the local shops. Then, when you feel like smoking something, maybe mix only 25% tobacco in with the smoking herbs, and puff away. Over a period of time cut out the tobacco completely, until you are just smoking something that ISN'T addictive. You will still feel that itch a bit but you'll have something to smoke in your hands, and half of the whole thing I find is just wanting something to hold, puff on etc.

I went from smoking every day with tobacco, to completely replacing tobacco with something else (for me a very weak home grown plant). It wasnt as enjoyable, but it meant that I'd quit nicotene even though I was still smoking. From then on, keep smoking if you feel you need to, as you gradually get over the hump and your nicotene cravings subside, by which time you can cut out smoking altogether or gradually ween off it, whatever.

By the way there are actually some perfectly nice legal smoking herbs out there, pick a few and see what you like.

Oh, this will only work if you can roll your own obviously.

Best of luck with it - smoking is for losers!

The worst thing is making excuses for yourself as to why it's allowable, ie "I got in an argument and I'm stressed out, so it's ok for me to buy that extra packet/pouch this one time..."

Try to recognise when you are doing that and fight it, I know it's hard.

I think if you have a reason, it makes you stronger and for you 22nd sounds ideal, i will let you know visa versa.

I read something yesterday that made me feel different, "stop asking why and start asking how!".

    That's very true...

Thanks ANON, but you know, if i do something i go all the way.... So, that means, i won't sit around trying different things for weeks on end, i'll make that decision clear and crisp and DO... Cold Turkey.

    So, i will....

Plus i only have 6 weeks until he's here and i can't be smoking on those three days, or 3 before or even feel like one etc etc etc etc sure you get that bit.

A friend of mine recommends a hypnotherapist...i dont know if this involves 'meetings' or is a one to one session.

Not sure if thats something youd be up for...but i know that its worked for a lot of people.

Also, ive heard if you swap from ciggies to rollies, you can seriously cut down how much you smoke...this might be a good way to start / cut the amount you smoke and then gradually stop?

However you decide to do it, best of luck!

Well, you're 40+ and you haven't stopped yet, so maybe the cold turkey approach isn't working out as well as you thought it might. If you're actually going to make that decision, instead of saying you will, make it now and see how it turns out...

IIRC Nicotene is as addictive as heroin, and as we all know it's practically impossible to go cold turkey, so doctors prescrive methodone or whatever.

I'm not a smoker, never have been, so this comes right out of my daddy's mouth:
"Slowly cut down on the amount you smoke. If you smoke a pack a day, smoke half a pack. If you smoke 5 cigarettes a day, smoke 4. The cravings will go away if you do it slowly."
But he quit smoking when he was a teenager.
I just think smoking is the nastiest thing ... but I hear tell it's a lot better-received in Europe. My state just passed a law where people can't smoke inside public buildings and let me say I am HAPPY CAMPER

Yes, i am that!! A good that!! I have done it before twice (cold turkey) but because someone else wanted me to, not me which is the start, as this time "i want to".

And there is some form of strength that makes me feel great to do it this way i guess, but i agree, it's practically impossible.

The main reason for me is that after 10 days, it is ok, i feel great but with patches etc, i rip them of and smoke, weird...
I tried this to and got to 3 a day.

So here's the plan as i want to this time, i am actually trying your way little, then your way anon, so 1 week, see where i am....

    Thanks guys.
