    Default Bleeding after smear

Hi, I had a pap smear 3 weeks ago, and 2 days later I had spotting for about a week. It wasn't really that bad, but me and my partner had sex, and the next morning I started bleeding really heavily and it lasted for the week again. One afternoon I thought something wasn't right so I decided to go to the loo. I found a massive clot there which frightened me so much I went to see the doctor, who referred me straight to the gyno. I had a swab taken which was sent off to be tested for pretty much everything and blood (in case I had turned aniemic) the blood test was ok, so they sent me home with 3 lot's of antibiotics and 2 lot's of tablets for bleeding (tranexamic acid and mefenamic acid) They reduced the bleeding a lot, but the antibiotics just weren't agreeing with me (sickness and diarrhea). I had the swab results back today all clear, which meant I could stop taking the antibiotics. I thought I could stop taking the bleeding tablets, because I hadn't had bleeding in a day or 2, but now today I'm getting a bit of blood when I wee. Does anyone have any advice on whether I should keep taking them, or stop them?

Thought I would add, that I'm on the depo provera injection, and haven't had a period in about 2 and a half years, so this has pretty much frightened me.

    Thanks.

First of all, I recommend that you stop taking the Depo Provera immediately if you have been on it for over two years! I am not sure if you are aware, but there is a warning on Depo packaging from the FDA which says it should NOT be taken any longer then two years because it causes Osteoporosis. Many women still do not know about this. Please do some research on the drug and you will see what I am talking about.

When you get a papsmere, part of the test is to s****e some skin for testing. It can some times cause some bleeding, but it's usually very small. It could be possible that the doctor s****ed a little too hard?

But, since you mention that you saw a "clot", this makes me think that you are having a period. Many women refer to the bloody clumps as clots, when they are in fact part of the lining of the uterine wall which is shed during periods. It is very normal for to have these clumps while on your period.

There are a few reasons you may have started your period even while on Depo. If you were late at all getting your shot, even by a week, it can some times cause bleeding to kick in. If your body is going through a natural hormone change, that can also cause irregular bleeding. Excessive stress or health problems can also cause bleeding to start even if you are on Depo.

I think you should concider trying a new method of birth control.

Thanks very much for your reply. My next depo would be due on 4th December, but decided to see the doctor about changing to the pill. He told me to start taking the pill about a week before the injection is due. I started taking Microgynon 30 on Saturday. I was sick of getting so many side effects with depo eg. Sore breasts, aching all over, very bad mood swings that I just couldn't go on with it anymore.
One thing I need to know though. Since with Depo, it takes up to a year to get pregnant I'm wondering if changing to the pill now will take just as long?
Say if I wanted to get pregnant within the next year or 2?

    Thanks.

I am not sure how the new birth control will effect your abillity to get pregnant. I personally got my period back almost exactly a year after I stopped taking Depo. And even then, it was a couple more years of not being on any birth control before it finally became normal. I thought I was going to be irregular forever. I too had mood swings, migraines, hair loss, and all kinds of other garbage.

There are websites out there which are specifically for Depo Provera users. I spent hours and hours reading through all the personal testimonials and articles. Many women were finding that they could not get pregnant for over 5 years after stopping Depo. I don't know if it was just coincidence or not, but I have a feeling that the Depo was to blame.

    My honest opinion:

If you plan to get pregnant in two years, stop taking all birth control now and use condoms or something. I say it's better safe then sorry, right? Plus, if you are not taking anything, you can monitor the changes in your cycles and see how things are progressing.
