I meant to add that after looking at information on the internet myself, I wonder if it may be a "microperforate hymen" due to the fact I have received regular menstrual periods since I was 12yrs old.
To start off with the basics, I am 22yrs old and a virgin but I went for my first pap smear the other week. I wasn't sure if it was needed as different doctors tell me different things but my gynecologist was wonderful. However she discovered a problem performing any kind of exam and sent me for an MRI since she was discovering a "blockage". She is now referring me to another specialist but thinks I may have an imperforate hymen that requires surgery. She started to say something about how since I obviously don't know what it's like to give birth, think of it as having a tooth taken out. Well those sound two drastically different kinds of pains to me and now I'm worried about it.
Has anyone ever had this surgery and can tell me all about it including what you remember and any effects after? I know they'll explain it all to me but I'd rather hear from people who have experienced this. I have a low pain threshold so it's making me nervous. Thank you!

I am fifteen years old I had a Imperforate Hymen Surgery in November. It is nothing to be afraid of. I found out about my problem in the summer of 2008, I am a virgin, and at the time had never ever gotten a period. This is why I went to see a doctor out of random to figure out why. At first they thought it was because of my eating disorder and irregular eating patterns which I struggled with for 4 years, but decided to do a complete checkup with my Gynecologist..They decided to do a Ultrasound a month later, and found nothing. They had no idea what was wrong with me. They also decided a Catscan was necessary and it showed signs of a blockage of some sort. Finally, 5 more checkups and many weeks later they figured it was a imperforate hymen and ive really been having regular periods for 2 years but layers of skin have been blocking it to be released.
anyways, to cut to the chase. I got my surgery done, they took lots of blood beforehand..they put an IV in me..eventually knocked me out so i was asleep during the whole thing. i wasnt awake whatsoever. when i woke up i did have bad pains there but it wasnt completely horrible because i was still pretty goodfeeling from the medicine that knocked me out. i bled for a few days ended up getting my period during my recovery. but basically its not bad at all, i was able to walk around for the most part and actually ended up going out and having fun after only like 4 days of recovery
nothing to be afraid of :]
Oh and the effects im sure youre curious. well ive gotten very fed up with the doctors, ive gotten several checkups and they decided to give me Dialators, because after the surgery you become very tight and must keep it open so scar tissue doesnt build a block back up,
dialators are around 120 $$ for 4 sizes, get fitted for them and you use them for 15 minutes a day, laying down. for two weeks and move to the next size up.
hope i answered all that was questioned.

Oh my gosh, thank you so so much for replying to this. It eases my mind just to hear about it from someone who has had the experience and not a doctor passing me information, no matter how many times they may have dealt with it!
It's good to know that you were completely knocked out for the surgery, I assumed I would be but wasn't sure and that worried me. I would like to be completely oblivious to it. Did you stay in hospital for any length of time for them to monitor the recovery or pain? Or were you discharged and then given painkillers to take? I'm not exactly looking forward to any pain but I'm thinking of it as being pretty minor due to the painkillers they'd give me, plus it's something I need done
They haven't discussed dialators with me yet because they're still just working out exactly when and how to do the surgery, I'm sure they will then mention them. I did read about them online though and thought it sounded a good idea. Well, right now it actually sounds a big deal because I've never even been able to use tampons before obviously, but I understand about needing to keep it open and not let the scar tissue build up.
Thank you again for your help!
