I'm 22 years old (23 this summer), and I have never been to the gyno. I have been sexually active for about 4 years. The reason I've never been is because I'm very seriously frightened by doctors. I'm curious to know what I should expect, as I'm embarrassed that I've never been and don't know what to tell them when I go. Should I have a pap smear as well?

Also, I'm not sure if anyone here can help, but after I had a miscarriage, I noticed a flesh colored bump on my labia majora. There are no other bumps (or anything else) anywhere on my genital area, and sometimes the size of it changes from completely flat to around the size of a ballpoint pen tip.

    Thanks everyone, in advance!

You've had a miscarriage and never saw a gyno?! Yikes lady.

Well, it is good you are going now. There's not much anyone can tell you that will make you feel better about getting a check up. It's just plain unpleasant. The only advice I can give you is don't rush in and out of there and be sure to tell the doc everything and ask lots of questions. Tell her/him it is your first visit and that you are nervous and they'll try to make it as comfortable as possible. Just keep in mind that it's for your own good and for you health and well being.

It's hard to relax when someone is poking and prodding you but being tense only makes it harder. You'll get a breast exam, they'll listen to your heart and lungs, take your weight and you'll get a pap. Basically just an overall check to make sure you are healthy and everything is working properly.

Good luck and try not to work yourself up over it. From my experience, gynos are far friendlier and much more caring and comfortable than a regular doctor so you should be just fine.

My first gyno visit was about a year and a half ago. When I told the nurse it was my first, she made sure to explain everything that was going to happen, showed me the brushes and everything they were going to use.
I made a post about it here: http://www.womens-health.com/boards/...trip-gyno.html
It doesn't have to be completely unpleasant if your doctor is nice. I hope yours is, and like sourpuss said don't run in and out; ask questions!
