This all started about 7 months ago... I'm almost 18 now and I haven't had any drastic changes lately. I use the same soap, laundry detergent, etc etc. My boyfriend and I had just started having sex about a month before I got my first yeast infection. He's the only guy I've had sex with since then. It wasn't the first time I'd had sex either, I'd used the same type of condoms before and never had any problems. I had a yeast infection about a year earlier, so I just went to the store and got the Monistat and it seemed to do the trick at the time. It came back, but not as bad.
I went to the gyno for the first time to get birth control pills. I also got tested for every STD possible (all of which came back negative) She did the normal pap smear and the culture came back with yeast, so they prescribed me flucanazole. I took the pill that day and it seemed to go away for the time, but came back shortly after. My doctor just called in another pill, so I took it again, about a week later.
Shortly after this, I got another yeast infection, but I started my period the day after. I figured I would wait for my period to stop before trying to treat it. But my period lasted for 28 days NONSTOP, so I went back to my gyno. They took a culture and found yeast and BV. My doctor prescribed 4 flucanazole pills - I took one a week for four weeks. I was told to finish the treatment for yeast before I could begin the treatment for BV. I forget what the drug was called, but it was the pills you take for 7 days that you cannot consume alcohol with. I followed the instructions, but sure enough, I only had one day of relief from the infections.
The yeast infection came back, and this time it was BAD. I was so uncomfortable, I was nearly in tears. I couldn't function or leave my house, I was so itchy! The topical creams weren't helping at all. It was a Saturday, so I had no other choice but to go to the pharmacy and get Monistat again. It soothed the itchiness enough that I was able to function. I called my doctor to make an appointment, but instead of scheduling an appointment, she just wanted to call in a prescription. I made sure I got in the office to get retested. I also made my boyfriend go to his doctor just to be sure he wasn't giving me the yeast infection back every time I got rid of it. His doctor said he did not have the infection, but gave him Flucanazole to take, just to be sure.
Two uncomfortable weeks later, I went back to my doctor and I found out I still had a yeast infection and BV. So my doctor once again prescribed the same stregth Flucanozole. This time it was one pill a week for only three weeks. After treating that, we moved on to the BV. This time I used Metronidazole - the vaginal gel instead of the oral meds. She also advised that I stop taking birth control pills, thinking that could be the cause. (which doesn't make sense because I had a yeast infection before even taking the BC) She also had my fasting blood sugar tested thinking I might me diabetic. I eat healthy and am athletic and of healthy weight, so it came back completely normal, as expected.
The treatments didn't help at all (big shocker!) A week ago, I had severe pain in my lower pelvic area which I was told (over the phone because my doctor did not want to see me) was a cyst on my ovary from stopping the birth control pills. I'm still uncomfortable and EXTREMELY frustrated. I went to a new doctor a few days ago and I'm awaiting the results from this test which I'm almost certain will come back with BV and yeast... it's not even the itchiness that bothers me anymore (I've just become accostomed to it), it's the odor that's really troublesome. Sometimes it gets so bad, that I can smell it by just taking off my jeans. Any ideas on how I should approach the situation with the new doctor? It's obvious the treatment the last doctor was using isn't working, and I don't want to continue with a treatment that ISN'T WORKING.
Please, if you have any advice let me know. I'm getting desperate...
I know how you feel. I used to get yeast infections terribly and all the time. I RARELY get them anymore since I started using a Diva Cup instead of tampons that helped alot. If you haven't heard of it it is a sylicon cup that you use during your period. you insert it at the beginning of your period, empty it and wash it every so often. You'll figure out the frequency you need to do this. THey cost about $35 but you never have to buy anything for your period EVER AGAIN! My periods have become so less inconvenient for me. Once you put it in it's with you and you don't have to worry about carrying anything else with youThe most important thing is it doesn't mess with your bodies natural moisture and balance. Tampons have bleach in them! My vag is so much happier now. Also, you probably have heard but EVERY time you or anything else touches your vagina you are at risk for another infection. Make sure you and your boyfriend wash your hands before touching yourself. I carry hand sanitizer cuz you never know
Afterwards always urinate which will sanitize you down there. As long as I do these two things, diva cup, and sanitation I don't get them anymore. I went from having them atleast every other week to only once in the last 6 months and I could pinpoint the moment I got the infection (fell asleep after sex before peeing) So that's my advice. Good luck. I know how you feel.
