My understanding of Hyperplasia (or uterine lining thickening) is that there is no progesterone kicking into effect so the estrogen continues the growth of the unterine lining unchallenged. Normally the estrogen causes the lining to grow in preperation for an pregnancy but when no pregnancy occurs the progesterine hormone kicks in and stops the growth of the unterine lining which then sheds as a period. I was diagnosed with hyperplasia last year and was on progesterone hormone therapy for about 2 months then an ultrasound showed the lineing was about 30mm think (normal is under 10mm I believe) so I ended up having a D&C to take it all out. So for whatever reason (you may be menopausal or post menopausal or your body is not producing progesterone) that is why the uterine lining can overgrow.
