Default Doctor not forthcoming, biopsy Thursday

So my favorite waitress confided to me that her doctor wants her to have a biopsy on Thursday. She first told me how he felt her breast, esp. under the arms area back and forth. Told her she needed a biopsy right away. She also said that he told her she had endometriosis (sp) but when she asked about it he ignored her. She later checked the internet on this. The nurse told her to take pain meds before because it would be painful.

Meaning to console her I said that a breast biopsy might not be so bad when she said it was not a breast biopsy. Friends who have have breast biopsies have been put to sleep. I don't know if they are talking ovaries, cervix or what. She is really frightened.

Any suggestions as to what the doctor might be after, what I might suggest to her (other than get a doctor who will communicate). This young woman (mid 30's) has had a lot of grief in her life lately and is a nervous wreck

    Any clarification would be good.

Anything like this happen to anyone else?

    Thanks.

PS There are a lot of unqualified doctors in this area. It almost sounds like they are to do a biopsy without anathesia. In a hospital setting I had a liver biopsy w/o being put to sleep and it was OK (major medical center hospital).

i think the first step would be to get a decent doctor - try and find someone who can recommend one so you know shes getting the correct treatment.

i'd just advise her to get clued up and do a lot of reading about all the medical terminology etc. and what to expect, then at lesat she will know what the doctors are saying to her and will know if something isnt quite right.

    best of luck!

agree w/ hanni - educate yourself by checking out doc.s and getting info. Watch out for bad internet sources of med info.- recommend solid, vetted sources such as U.S.CDC (medlineplus, for example), state health department or FDA websites. Oh, do it now! don't wait
