Hi all, I'm new to the forum today :-)
I'm looking for some general advice. This week I started a menstrual cycle and the pain was so severe I spent the entire day vomitting. I couldn't even keep 2 sips of water down. I ended up in hospital. I had an internal scan but they said everything looked normal, however, a blood test came back with 'extremely high levels of white blood cells' which apparently indicated a serious infection. However, nobody has determined what the infection is and I was released with pain killers, anti inflammatories and anti sickness medication. At first it was suspected appendicitis but I responded so well to treatment that they now doubt it was appendix.
My cycle is still going now which is longer than normal and although I'm not in extreme pain anymore, I still have pain and feel a little queasy. Is it possible to have a cervical infection that does not show on an internal scan/ultra sound?
I have to admit it was quite frightening and I've never experienced pain like it but I find it difficult to believe that pain alone could cause me to have been so ill.
I appreciate any advice.
There are a whole host of infections that scans and ultrasounds would not pick up because that's not really what they are for. I would suggest going to your doctor after your period has finished and asking for a swab of the cervix to be cultured in the lab so they can see what bacteria grows. You don't mention antibiotics as part of what you were given so if it's a bacterial infection they would be necessary. Try not to worry though sometimes there isn't an identifiable infection present when white cell counts are high and the body deals with whatever it was without us ever knowing for sure.
