So, I went to my OBG today, and I was diagnosed with a UTI. They've given me Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole-TMP something...), but I was wondering if UTI's can cause referred upper abdominal tenderness? I have some very tender spots about half an inch to the right of where the upper midline is, and approximately two inches above my navel.
At least I found out what it was that was causing at least some of my pain! Now to take my first pill!![]()

There are those who believe that dictionaries should not merely reflect the times but also protect English from the mindless assaults of the trendy.
I won't, trust me! They said to take one twice a day with lots of water, and to do that for five days and call on monday to let them know if everything is cleared up. If I still have the abdominal pain I will let them know when I call. But now I know what the problem is (mostly), and it wasn't anything too terrible.
Thank you ItsASecret!

Okay, I am really really frustrated right now! I took the bactrim when I was diagnosed with my UTI (Took it from 7/23 to 7/27 like the directions said), and after I finished my meds, it went away and it was business as usual and I was happy and UTI-free.
BUT, now it is a week later, and I'm feeling the burning when I finish urinating AGAIN! WHAT is going on!? I don't want to tell my mom after a week of being UTI-free that I have one again! She most likely won't take me back to my OBG to get more medicine, and then what will I do? I don't know if there are home remedies to treat UTIs, except for cranberry juice, and I drank all that last week when I had my FIRST one!!! I don't understand what is happening now. Please, someone help me!

Any general doctor can diagnose a UTI, it's just a urine test, but if you are unsure, you can buy test strips from the store and do it yourself. Azo makes them I believe. Do you have any other symptoms that developed? Any vaginal discharge? Still have cloudy urine or any back/kidney pain? Fever? I had my first UTI back in Jan. 09 and after I finished my meds (they put me on Cipro for 5-7 days) I went back because I still had burning and developed discharge. The UTI was gone, but I ended up having a yeast infection+bacterial vaginosis. When I get yeast infections I don't always get the cottage cheese discharge, a lot of time it is just intense burning. It's possible that's what has happened here, as broad spectrum antibiotics kill off ALL bacteria, good and bad and it can mess up the flora of your vagina. Either way, your best bet is to get it checked out by a doctor to make sure it doesn't develop into more problems.
Just as a side note, I would recommend taking acidophilus supplements or at least eating some plain yogurt any time you are on antibiotics. This will help prevent yeast infections and other sorts of bacterial overgrowth problems that result from the meds. And also, always, always make sure you are wiping front to back.
I do have some discharge, and my OBG said she found no traces of yeast infection in me at all last week. I normally have discharge though, so I'm not too concerned, although it's kind of...greenish in color, like when you have a cold and you sneeze, that kind of green almost. Other than that the consistency is normal for discharge.
I have no pain that i can really think of, except for a little lower abdominal pain, but I think that might be menustral cramping. I've been keeping track of my symptoms and they are as follows:
8/3/10
+Cramps (menustral?)
8/4/10
+Pain (burning) when urinating
+Frequent urge to urinate
+Spots of blood at end of urination around 2:40pm (Possibly from rubbing too hard during urination earlier in day?), again at 3:02pm--I see none in toilet bowl, only on paper.
+Mildly cloudy urine, no odor (it's like if you have a couple drops of milk left in a glass and fill it with water--the color is also very pale yellow, as i have been drinking a lot of water.)

As far as the discharge looking a little green, that's a bit unusual. No chance of an STD or anything is there? Normally blood is indicative of a UTI, as is cloudy urine and frequent urination. You should go see a doctor so it doesn't progress into a kidney infection. You may just need a second round of antibiotics to knock out the bacteria. It may not have gotten it all the first go around or something.
No chance whatsoever--I have not been sexually active for two years now, and my STD results from my OBG exam (my first one in June) all came back negative. As far as the discharge looking a little green, that's a bit unusual. No chance of an STD or anything is there?
I'll have to talk to my mother about getting yet ANOTHER appointment, she will NOT be pleased. I did explain the situation to my father though, who said they may just call in another round of Bactrim. I'm just really mad because I got it again, even though I know it's not the OBG's fault.

Okay, it is now day 4 of this whole issue, and I am pretty annoyed now. The symptoms are really, really irritating and painful. I went to a lab and gave another urine sample, and it should have been sent to my OBG the first thing Friday morning. Well, Friday came and went with absolutely NO word from the office! Now it is the weekend, the office is closed, and I will not be able to call until Monday to see what can be done. I am being driven crazy by this and there's nothing I can do about it right now. It's so frustrating!

You can add a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to a pint of water and drink it down, do this several times each day and follow each doctored glass with a plain glass of water. That should help to alkalise the urine and flush things through until your doctors opens again.
