I'm 27 and I have a dreaded fear of papsmear test. I have had two done when I was 22 and had such a traumatic experiences for both I've never had one since. Basically the first pap there was blood and the test came back inconsistent. So I had to go back again and the doctor said because it was so traumatic for me to come back in six months. I did this, took a valium before I went in and still found the whole experience excruciating and traumatic. The test came back clear. Basically I just wonder if there are any other women out there who have unrealistic fears of pap smears and/or their vaginas? I have never been able to use a tampon either, and initially sex can be painful but once I'm in the mood its all good. Do you think I should see a psychologist about this fear? I was raised by my grandma who was very old fashioned and viewed sex/periods etc as 'taboo' so I'm thinking this could be part of the reason, and I think maybe I have a 'tight' vagina also.... I know how important it is to have a papsmear and I want to get it done but the thought sends me running

It does sound psychological as you can have sex if you're in the mood. I think getting some couselling of some description would help you to get past this tensing up at other times.

Maybe a body and mind counsellor of some sort. Its very plausible that your upbringing could have caused you some problems. Maybe even subconsiously.
