Default How do I find a gynecologist who will be sensitive to my vaginismus?

My first gynecologist chalked it up to my being a virgin when I squirmed and cried on the stirrups when she stuck a speculum in me... And then the next just went in there quick, which while it was quick I still suffered a lot... I mean, lately, my vaginismus has been getting so much better but the fear always comes back when I see those stirrups... Is there some way that this can be made easier for me?

I have a friend with vaginismus and she found that if she asked to insert the speculum herself so the penetration part was under her own steam she could manage to have a internal examination without any problems. You could also try working with dilators for a while to get used to the sensation of penetration before you go.

I don't have any knowledge of vaginismus but am absolutely terrified at the idea of a speculum exam. I have never had one, despite being well past the age where I should have. According to Google, there are topical numbing creams that the doctor can apply beforehand to ease discomfort. I don't know whether they (gyns) have this type of medication on hand for those who request it or if it needs to be ordered ahead of time or what, just a suggestion you might want to look into. Anyone on here have experience with such a cream? Good luck to you. I'm sorry to hear of your painful past experiences. Like any type of doctor, perhaps you need to "shop around" a bit to find one who truly is compassionate, will explain before doing, and in general you feel comfortable with.
