Ok, I have a question for everyone. What exactly causes toxic shock syndrome? Is it just the act of inserting ANYTHING at all into the vagina, i.e. when having sex or using applicators for say yeast or BV medications, or does it only occur when things are left up there a for a long period of time, say hours like with a tampon? Something else?
Just curious because I am 22 and I have never used a tampon in my life, but I saw the repHresh ones at the store and since I've had stubborn BV, I thought I'd give it a try. However, the little insert had a warning about TSS and about how it can be fatal in some cases and now I'm scared to death to even try them :S
TSS is a rare but extremely dangerous infection related illness. What happens is a particular bacteria, usually Staphylococcus aureus, releases a toxin that builds up to harmful levels. An infection with Staphylococcus species is known as a staph infection and those are notorious for causing some major problems so you simply do not want to have the infection. It causes a high fever, very low blood pressure, rashes much like sunburn, diarrhea, and failure of multiple organ systems. Leaving a tampon in for longer than recommended has been linked to TSS but it does not mean if you forget about it for an hour that you are doomed, not at all the case. TSS is very rare, most people can fight off the toxins built up by the bacteria however some cannot causing them to be more susceptible to a systemic reaction of TSS. Using tampons correctly is all you have to do there is really no reason to be scared to death about using them.
There are those who believe that dictionaries should not merely reflect the times but also protect English from the mindless assaults of the trendy.
