Hysteroscopy Findings - Translation Needed!

Hello everyone,

I had a hysteroscopy following an ultrasound that suggested I had a polyp. I've been having intermenstrual bleeding since August 2010. They didn't find a polyp but I have adhesions and I've been referred for an urgent MRI and I don't know what's going on.

Here's what the results say:
EVA: U/U [degree symbol], CX [degree symbol], uterus N/S, midposition mobile. String of IUCD in situ. Endometrial cavity, thin, atrophic, no polyp seen, unable to see ostea. Firm adhesions +++ Upper portion of uterine cavity fixed.

I'm 40, no pregnancies, no D+Cs (though I have had a previous polyp removed), not on pill/hormones.

Any idea what's going on?

You didn't ask for support or what what others who have had these symptoms have experienced or done. You asked for an interpretation of the MRI results. It would be grossly inappropriate for anyone who is not trained in this field to try to tell you what all that really means.

It may be that there are some members here who have had similar experiences who will be able to share some of what they did or learned. But that will be based on having had polyps or bleeding. not on the MRI interpretation. This is a forum for sharing opinions and ideas and experiences. I wanted to be certain that you understood that this is not a medical forum. I want you to get the information you want, but to do so in appropriate way.

For clarity: I know what the words mean. I was hoping someone out there could help me understand why a premenopausal woman would have an atrophic endometrium (at the start of her regular heavy period), and why I would have grade 3 adhesions. I suppose I was hoping for someone who'd been through similar who would be kind enough to chat. They're also calling what they said was a polyp an area of thickening. Of course I have talked to my doctor but she doesn't have anything to add.

I'll bet that through the course of the day you will get some responses from other women who have dealt with this. It's frustrating that even with all the tests and images, we still don't get really satisfactory answers sometimes. You might try doing a search on the British Medical Journal's web site. It can be a little time consumming to dig through all the pages (it will bring up the entire issue and you have to run through it to find what you want) but I've found some great research and info there related to my business area of interest. I'm not British but still find it one of the better information sources. If there is any research or studies that have been done in last couple decades you may well find it there.

If you don't find someone here who can relate, try googling: TCOYF and go to the website, sign up and find the forums. Those forums are specifically for women with questions about their cycles and reproduction etc. There's not much you could experience that you couldn't find there.

Your entering menopause would be the most likely cause, it simply causes many symptoms. If your doctor has nothing more to add then it likely means that there is nothing serious going on and they are simply going about protocol with precautionary MRI measures. Polyps are common so it is not surprising that a doctor would think that a polyp could have been growing in an area that appears to be of greater density. The adhesions, or scarring, can cause the appearance of thickening and the urgency of an MRI is more towards the scarring because it can mean an overgrowth of cells (including cancerous or tumor cells) which they will want to know more about. How the adhesions got there are anyone's guess. Could be hormonal, explained by changing body entering menopause, could be hormonal imbalances not due to menopausal symptoms, could be pharmacological induced interactions, could be inflammation, could be an infection, could be simply scar tissue that cells decided to grow into...literally anything and only a doctor can really pinpoint what could be at play which is why they want an MRI to check it out more. It is really up to the professional opinion of the doctor to tell you whether or not it is severe and whether or not they can help you out with it. No one else can really do anything unfortunately.
