Acitive Gel as needed. Read the product instructions & that will give you some guidelines. If your pH is high, the gel will lower it. It introduces (a mild) acid into the vagina.

pH strips from testyourvagina.com (related info from this doctor at vaginosis.com, which is linked to on the site). The link for this is in one of my earlier posts.

HI GINGER ARK HON!!!!

Hello All,

Just a little update on my situation. I have been suffering from BV for a number of years and thought that I was the only one, until I came across this website. I've been on all the usual antibiotics that are prescibed only end up with recurring BV. I have been reading all of the posts and decided to try acidophilus and cranberry tablets. My ph used to be off the charts when I would flare up even 2wks after prescribed meds. I went today to be rechecked and my ph was between 4.5-5.0. I was ecstatic. She saw no clue cells and my discharge is pretty normal. I am going to increase to one more acidophilus pill orally per night to make 6 and see how that goes. I will keep you updated. Thanks for all the great advice!

The condoms we used had a small amount of lubricant on them, but no spermicide. Spermicide is very mean to a vagina with BV. Ouch. After I'd been symptom free for about 2 months, we had sex without a condom once. I waited to see how it would go. Things seemed okay. So we just progressed cautiously. I now take the precaution of using a little Active Gel right after sex.

The good news for you is that you can buy all of these treatments without a prescription. You have the ability to cure yourself and track your progress (if you buy the pH strips) without having to see a doctor or use insurance at all. Certainly doing this under a caring doctor's supervision would be preferable, but the truth is that many of us have been seeing doctors for years, & that was no benefit.

I wonder if this will be a lifetime regimen for me too. But I figure that having to take a little pill every day &/or use the gel every once in a while is a good trade-off. It's far preferable to the way I was living before.

I'm so glad you're finally getting relief.

hi hon......

i use fem dophilus by jarrows. i buy them at a local pharmacy and also you can get it at wholefoods store in the refridgerated section. i don't buy them online cause it can get warm and the good bacteria can die. good bacteria needs to stay cold. the femdophilus is kinda expensive....like $24-$26 a bottle with 30 pills. i take these orally and insert them vaginally. hope this helps.

Unhappy

So far so good...I have been having a discharge lately. Luckily no smell. Back pain is gone(smile) Just wondering if this is ok? How much is not ok? Understand I have been dealing with Bv for 12 yrs. So, I don't know what a normal discharge is. I noticed right before my period, the fishy smell & discharge was there-with a venegence!! Im very irregular so I thought that the home remedies weren't working. But after my cycle I used the H202, and I was back to normal. Im not having any luck finding the fem, thats orally and vaginally. Also, is just taking 2 400mcg of folic acid, 2 5 billion acidopho, and 2 probiotic gold- once daily enough? Any tips or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Its been a relief to finally feel clean again, just so scared, that it will return. Thank you all....

hi hon,
did you call around to all the health food stores in your area? i would try that if you haven't. also, ginger ark uses primdophilus reterui (?) ......don't know if i spelled it correctly, but she has the correct spelling in one of her post, and it works just as well. i prefer femdophilus cause it is designed for the vaginal health, one con is that it is kinda expensive. i still don't even know if i'm bv free yet but i can tell you with the femd, my discharge is way less and the smell isn't there anymore, smell is only there when i'm on my period but periods never smelled good anyways.

hope this helps!

msoftshell, the Nature's Way Primodophilus Reuteri is what I use, & if you can't buy it locally, you can order it on-line. Get the refrigerated kind. The company I ordered it from said that the shipping time isn't long enough to reduce its effectiveness. Also, I read that it takes a full 21 days for the lactobacillus to "colonize," so recovery can be slow. Your pH will normally rise before your period, so it's a good idea to up your dosage before then. Do you have strips to tell what your pH is running?

My pH is back up to 4.7, & I am having a slight smell with discharge, but I just had to have a round of antibiotics for a UTI. I felt like I was taking poison when I had to take the antibiotics. The antibiotics didn't work on the UTI, gave me a horrible yeast infection that took 2 rounds of Diflucan & a round of Monistate to clear up (not sure if it's completely cleared up even). And now, obviously the BV is trying to come back. I'm feeling really discouraged, but I'm trying so hard to stay positive. I knew the antibiotics would disturb the delicate balance I had finally achieved, & so it's 2 steps forward & 1 step back, right? Thank goodness for the Biofem.

I wonder about inserting a capsule vaginally at bedtime. Surely the capsule that is designed to melt in the stomach will melt in the vagina. I may try it.

I just found a vaginal suppository that contains lactobacillus, HLC Cadaclear. I am going to order them, & see if they help. I would think that using the Biofem that raises the pH, which the lactobacillus likes, in conjunction with using the lactobacillus suppositories, would be a combination of the right bacteria in the right environment.
