Thread: Mirena Coil side effects

I had my mirena put in when I was 20 years old, I was single with no children. My doctor put it in because of my endometriosis and terrible periods and pain. I had a mirena for 12 years (3 mirenas in total) and had mine removed 3 months ago (14 Jan 2011 - also stopped my anti-depressants the same day). Whilst on the Mirena I didn't have a period for the entire 12 years, which was bliss.

I got it removed because of all the suspected side effects (serious depression, massive weight gain, hormonal hairs, sensitive body and aches and pains etc). The doctors kept telling me there was nothing wrong with me (as per medical and blood tests) so after reading these forums, i thought I would get the mirena removed to see how i felt after that.

3 months after having it removed, I feel exactly how i felt on the mirena and I haven't had a period yet.... it's been 3 months and I still haven't had a period since having it removed.

Can anyone out there who has had their mirena removed tell me how long it was before they felt back to normal and got their period?? also, if they did or are feeling normal again.

Hi, I had my mirena fitted in December 2010 to reduce my bleeding. It did the job but since having this coil I have slowly been feeling that I am having a breakdown. Depressed, anxious, cant cope with the kids, needing to escape and really tired and not wanting to do anything (Basically everything was the complete opposite of what I am normally like). My husband and I agreed that it was time to go and see the doctor to have it removed.

In answer to your question, without speaking to the doctor yet. I assume 6 months. They say when you have it fitted you need to give it 6 months to work, perhaps the same when you have it taken out?

Hi I'm new to this so I hope I'm doing it right I had the coil fitted after I had my son in 2003 because I was bleeding very badly and they said it was a very good contraceptive. I began feeling anxious and depressed after about 3mths but the doctors said it was post natal depression and I would be fine. It gradually got worse and worse until I was so bad I couldn't be near my son and I was so nasty and bad tempered. The next doctor gave me a pill called citalopram an anti depressent and I felt a little better but was still having very down days and eeven weeks. I still have the coil but someone said my feelings might be connected then I found this blog and think I will have to have it removed to see what happens. Thanks to all you ladies on here there may be hope that I'm not crazy as I was a happy happy person before and I have a fantastic life so there could be a light. X

hi i had the mirena coil put in about a month after having mu daughter who is now 15 months so i have had it say 12 months or so but resently i have been havin randam bleed by randam i mean like i go the loo wipe there will be blood so i will put a pad on etc but then there is nothing is this normal this has happede about 3 times now am just getting worried any help and advice wud be great thank u xxxxx

I have had the mirena coil for two years and was very healthy prior to this. Was happy with the effects (after the first three months - the bleeding, etc.) and no longer have periods at all. But the weight gain! I was a size 12 and am now verging on a 16. I have put on 20lbs in this time and yes, I eat healthily and exercise. I get very bloated and started to get abdominal pains. The weight gain, pains and bloating led the doctor to send me for a scan, which found I now have ovarian cysts which bleed. I didn't have them before. I have also been suffering from a terriible, itchy rash on my face for the last 18 months which was attributed to an allergy, but nothing they gave me other than steroids cleared it; it always came back. Now it has dawned that this may also be a side effect of the coil too. I am now having the mirena removed and as I am now in my 40's and have had my children, have opted for sterilisation instead!
